Datong is about 640 kilometers from Beidaihe. Datong, called Yunzhong and Pingcheng in ancient times, is a prefecture-level city in Shanxi Province, located in the northernmost part of Shanxi Province. It is one of the central cities in the border area of China, Shanxi, Hebei and Mongolia, and an important comprehensive energy base approved by the State Council. Beidaihe, formerly known as Yushui, belongs to Qinhuangdao City, Hebei Province, located in the northeast of Hebei Province and southwest of Qinhuangdao City.

Datong is one of the first national historical and cultural cities. It used to be the capital of the Northern Wei Dynasty, with Liao and Jin as the capital and many historical sites. The famous cultural relics include Yungang Grottoes, Huayan Temple, Shanhua Temple, Hengshan Hanging Temple, Jiulong Wall and so on.

Beidaihe borders Bohai Sea in the east and south, Funing District in the west and north, and Haigang District in the northeast, with a total administrative area of 1 12.45 square kilometers. On September 20 19, it was selected as the first batch of national global tourism demonstration zones.
