The ancient city of Huizhou is located on the north bank of the Lianjiang River in She County. It was built in the Qin Dynasty and became the seat of the ancient Huizhou government after the Tang Dynasty. Tang Xianzu once said, "I will never dream of a dream." "Huizhou" has made many people dream about it. The city gates, archways, and government offices unique to the government allow tourists to still appreciate the legacy of ancient Huizhou.
There are many ways to enter the ancient city. It is not very particular which way to enter. The ancient city is not big, and you can visit the main attractions in a circle. There are ticket offices in Huiyuan near Renhe Building in the north and Duojingyuan Visitor Service Center outside Wengcheng in the south. Among the several gates in the ancient city of Huizhou, Nanqiao Tower is the most distinctive. 13 pairs of pillars form the door frame and are lined up in the door opening to support the tower. It is said that this "row of columns" is the authentic city gate shape of the Northern Song Dynasty.
The Xu Guo Shifang you see after entering the Dongqiao Tower (Yanghe Gate) is the most essential part of the entire ancient city. It was built in the twelfth year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (AD 1584). The archway has eight pillars, with a "mouth"-shaped cross-section. It is a three-dimensional structure. You can observe the four outer sides and the four inner sides. There are twelve stone lions sitting at the foot of the pillars, and the stone carvings on the upper part are exquisite. There is currently only one ancient archway with this shape in China, which shows the noble status of the owner of the archway, Xu Guo, a veteran of three dynasties.
Many attractions in the ancient city are emanating from the Xuguo Shifang. To the west, you can go to the Huizhou Government Office, which was rebuilt in modern times to imitate the appearance of the Ming Dynasty government office; to the east, you can visit the palace of Tao Xingzhi, a native of Shexian County. Memorial Hall; you can visit Huiyuan to the north, but Huiyuan is full of antique buildings. Doushan Street, located in the northeast of the ancient city, is home to ancient Hui-style houses, archways and ancient wells. It is very interesting to walk on the ancient street paved with bluestone slabs and cobblestones.
Exit the ancient city from Wengcheng, cross the Taiping Bridge, a stone bridge built during the Hongzhi period of the Ming Dynasty, and arrive at the south bank of Lianjiang River, where there are Taibai Tower and Xin'an Stele Garden. Taibai Tower was built in memory of Li Bai. The most famous ones in Xin'an Stele Garden are "Yu Qingzhai Tie" and "Qingjiantang Tie" from the Ming Dynasty. Visitors who like calligraphy can come and take a look. Along the Lianjiang River eastward, the Changqing Temple Pagoda, built in the second year of Xuanhe in the Northern Song Dynasty (1119 AD), is inaccessible, but it prepares real surprises for tourists who get close. There are colorful murals on each floor of the external tower. It has become blurred over time, and the murals cannot be seen from a distance.
The last scenic spot, Yuliang, is 2 kilometers east of the ancient city. The entrance is on the north bank of Lianjiang River, so after seeing the Changqing Temple Pagoda, you have to cross the Taiping Bridge again to return to the north bank. If you go from the south bank, you need to walk through it. From Yuliang Dam, you can only cross the river by going around Ziyang Bridge.
The main attraction of Yuliang is the Ming Dynasty Yuliang Dam on Lianjiang River. Whether you can walk up to the dam depends on the amount of water in Lianjiang River. If the water floods the ancient dam, you will not be able to go up to the dam. When you walk to the dam, remember to pay attention to the small stone "Yuanbao Lock" embedded horizontally between the long stones, which stabilizes the dam; there is also a water gate in the center of the dam for drainage. If you want to take a boat trip on the Lianjiang River in a local boat on the shore, the price can be negotiated. There are still residents living in Yuliang Old Street on the north shore. As always, they hang out their sheets in front of the ancient buildings. Time seems to have stood still here.
At night, the ancient city lights up and you can enjoy the night view. You can stay at the Huangshan Jiyue Huizhou Inn in Shexian County next to the Tao Xingzhi Memorial Hall in the ancient city, and there are more accommodations outside the ancient city. Restaurants are concentrated outside Huiyuan. The local specialty Huizhou Yipin Hotpot is a large pot with a layer of chicken, a layer of duck, a layer of meat, a layer of fried tofu, and is dotted with egg dumplings. Tofu, stinky mandarin fish, etc. are also worth trying. If you encounter a vendor selling plum and vegetable sesame cakes, you can buy them and eat them while shopping. They taste delicious.
