It is reported that the bridge was built in the 15th year of Jiajing in the Ming Dynasty (1536) and rebuilt in the 15th year of Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty (1676). It was destroyed by floods in the 34th year of Emperor Kangxi's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1695), and was rebuilt again in the 38th year of Emperor Kangxi's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1699).
The bridge is 133 meters long and 15 meters wide. It is a stone arch bridge with six piers and seven holes. It is one of the rare large ancient stone arch bridges in Anhui Province and ranks among the top 20 in length.
The old bridge is located at the mouth of Sanjiang River in Tunxi - the intersection of Xin'an River, Shuishui and Hengjiang River. It crosses the Hengjiang Estuary and runs through Tunxi Old Street and Liyang Ancient Town from east to west. This used to be the gateway to Tunxi, but now it is an important passage to Huangshan Airport, western suburbs, and Wuyuan, Jiangxi.
In October 2000, Tunxi Zhenhai Bridge was approved by the State Council as the eighth batch of national key cultural relics protection units.
In 2009, after expert investigation, it was discovered that the bridge was damaged in many places. It was planned to start restoration in 2010.
The result is that the bridge was destroyed by floods before the sign of "National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit" was erected.
