Overview of Sokcho
Sokcho (Romanized word Sogcho) is a port city on the east coast of South Korea, belonging to Gangwon Province (south). Originally a fishing village, it emerged as an iron ore export port in Xiangyang. The population is about 72,000. It is an offshore fishing base and the entrance to Mount Seorak. There are tourist spots such as Hwajinpo and Songji Lake. It is said that the name of the city is derived from the weed "horsetail" (Soksae) that grows luxuriantly in the wilderness.
Most people born in North Korea after the June 25 war settled in Sokcho, the city closest to their hometown, causing the urban population to surge. After hosting the World Jamborees in 1991 and the International Tourism Expo in 1999, Sokcho developed into an international tourist city. Currently, the Pioneer cruise ship of the Kumgangsan Waterway Tour departs from Sokcho International Passenger Port, and the number of tourists coming here is gradually increasing. Yangyang City, which is 30-40 minutes away from Sokcho, opened the Yangyang International Airport in April 2002, making transportation in and out of Sokcho more convenient.
Soccho, located in the northeastern part of South Korea, is a city rich in tourism resources such as mountains, water, and hot springs. Sokcho, with its heaven-given beauty, is a good time to visit all year round. In spring, everything revives and the scenery is naturally beautiful; in summer, you can sunbathe and do sea sports at Sokcho Beach; in autumn, you can climb Seorak Mountain to enjoy the beautiful red maples; in winter, Seorak Mountain is covered with snow, presenting a different kind of beauty, and there are also hot springs.
