Now let's explain the upper and lower couplet in detail:
The Shangqing School was formed in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, and it was named after spreading the refined Shangqing Classic. The Shangqing school takes keeping the spirit and being convinced as its practice method, supplemented by cultivating classics and practicing merits. Tao Hongjing (456-536), an important representative of the Shangqing School, was a recluse named Huayang. He was born in Liling, Danyang (now Nanjing, Jiangsu), and was born in Dow, Danyang, a famous family in Jiangdong. In the 1th year of Yongming (492), at the age of 36, he resigned from his official position and retired to Qushan (Maoshan) as a monk. After he retired, Tao Hongjing and his disciples operated in Maoshan for decades, which made Maoshan the center of Shangqing school, so later generations also called Shangqing school "Maoshan Sect".
Tao Hongjing initiated the precedent of integrating Buddhism and Taoism, and adopted the attitude of cultivating both Buddhism and Taoism. The True Letters written by him replaced the traditional views of "bearing responsibility" and the soul of the master of Dongyue with the views of reincarnation and hell. In his later years, Tao Hongjing claimed to be reincarnated as "Bodhisattva Shengli" and went to Asoka Tower in Ningbo to be ordained in person. After returning to Maoshan, two altars of Buddhism and Taoism were built, and the ceremony was held every other day. At the end of his life, his last words were "wearing a scarf" and "wearing a left armpit", and "covering his head and feet with a big robe" outside.
It is precisely because of Tao Hongjing's integration of Taoism and Buddhism that the Maoshan school worships the number "seven" like Buddhism. Buddhism worships and respects "seven", and Buddhism has various sayings such as "seven treasures", "seven sufferings" and "seven-level pagoda". Tao Hongjing also worships "seven" from this. In addition to being born in beginning of life, seven days is the wax, and one wax is one, so life is forty-nine days and seven; In addition to the influence of the ancient custom of worshipping "seven days", Tao Hongjing also arranged the gods, the earth, the ghosts and many fairies in seven levels in the map of the true spiritual position, and the order in the center was: Yuanshi Tianzun, Yuchen Yuanhuang Avenue, Taiji Jinque Emperor. The scripture of Huangting Jing, an important classic of Shangqing School, is also a seven-character verse.
It is precisely because Tao Hongjing, the founder of the Shangqing School in Maoshan, worships the Seven and combines Taoism and Buddhism. Therefore, the Maoshan Sect worships the Seven, and seven "long" and seven "multiply" are used at the back of the couplet, which is a typical and exaggerated expression of the worship of the Seven.
In addition to integrating Taoism and Buddhism, Tao Hongjing, like the vast majority of Taoists, advocates spiritual cultivation and shape-building. In addition, the important classics of Shangqing School, Huang Tingjing, are a summary of the previous generation's experience in practicing health, and provide basic theories and methods for later generations' internal cultivation, which is called "the wonderful book of longevity". It advocates "supporting life and keeping nothingness, being indifferent and doing nothing", and pursuing the cultivation method of being indifferent and doing nothing to achieve the purpose of longevity. His method of "preserving the spirit" combines the ancient classics and the medical classics that the five zang-organs have the spirit, and by thinking about the gods, you can reach the spirit, observe the nature in caves, nourish the spirit and refine the qi, and fly on clouds.
Therefore, one of the main purposes of the Maoshan School is to cultivate immortality and fly on clouds. Seven "long" and seven "rides" are maoshan taoist's longing for longevity and flying on clouds.
Let's talk about the "Three Rides" again. The emergence of the Taoist "Three Rides" should be influenced by Buddhism. The following "Seven Meanings" in Volume II of the Taoist Book of the Tang Dynasty pointed out the relationship between the "Three Rides" and the Shangqing School: "Those who pass through Chen's Three Rides correctly will achieve the goal of three rides with clear classics. Chen Zhe, Shen Ye, said at the end of the vulgar blunt root, learn from the three times, is also declared again. Three more holes are always the teaching of one ride, so it is a cloud: although three holes are three, they should be both, and one ride is also. Taixuan is Mahayana, Taiping is Mahayana, Taiqing is Hinayana, and it is connected to the Three Mahayanas. "
Taoism was the state religion in the Li and Tang Dynasties, and Li Shimin, Emperor Taizong, regarded himself as a descendant of Laozi. Therefore, Taoism was treated extremely well in the Tang Dynasty, and the Maoshan Sect was highly respected by the upper classes after it was established in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, and many celebrities were produced. In 68 AD, Wang Yuanzhi was posthumously awarded by Tang Gaozong as a doctor of Dazhong, Mr. posthumous title Shengzhen, and four years later, he was given a doctor of Zijin Guanglu. During Xuanzong of Tang Dynasty, Wu Jun was highly respected by the emperor, and during Tianbao period, Li Hanguang was awarded the title of Mr. Xuanjing by Xuanzong. It can be seen that the Maoshan Sect suffered royal grace at that time, and the skill of Maoshan's longevity was circulated all over the world.
Tang Dezong is the grandson of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty. This couplet originated from the Tang Dezong period in 78 AD, when Mao Shan's skill of longevity became famous all over the world. Therefore, writing "Good Mao Chang" in the Taoist temple is of course a master of Mao Shan's skill of longevity. For people at that time, it was not necessary to understand it at all. The last seven "long" characters have been explained before, which is an exaggerated expression of maoshan taoist's longing for immortality. Of course, "learning three times" means learning the Taoist theory of three times. Only by learning three times well can you take the flying fairy-"take, take, take, take, take". These seven times are also the reason for worshiping seven times.
It should be said that this couplet is one of the typical manifestations of Taoism's "mysterious and mysterious", which is quite interesting. However, the use of "Mao Chang" to "San Cheng" is actually not neat, and the odd couplet can be regarded as odd, but it is lacking in neatness. As for modern people, it seems that this is a strange connection. I think it is no wonder that Taoism declined and there was a shortage of talents after the Qing Dynasty entered the customs. I don't believe that no one can solve it before Qing Dynasty.
