Introduction to basic knowledge of sketching

1. What is sketch ( DRAWING ) ( DESSEIN )

A monochrome painting that uses lines to draw the light and dark of an object using charcoal, pencil, pen, etc. is called a sketch. Monochrome watercolor and monochrome oil paintings can also be counted as sketches; traditional Chinese line drawings and ink paintings can also be called sketches. The diversification of sketches usually refers to pencil drawings and charcoal drawings. Sketching is the basis of all painting, and it is a necessary stage for studying the art of painting. .Sketch usually uses methods that can leave traces on a flat surface: such as crayons, charcoal, pens, brushes, ink, and paper, etc. Others include wet clay, ink-stained cloth strips, metal, stone tools, and containers. or wear caused by the surface of the cloth.

Contours and lines are general terms for sketches. Sketch has a sense of natural rhythm. Different brushstrokes create different lines and cross-cutting relationships and rhythms, active and passive surroundings, planes, volumes, tones, and textures.

Sketching is a formal artistic creation that uses monochromatic lines to express things in the intuitive world. It can also express ideas, concepts, attitudes, feelings, fantasies, symbols and even abstract forms. It does not focus on overall and color as much as color painting, but on structure and form.

2. The status of sketching

Sketching is an independent art with independent status and value.

Sketching is the inevitable foundation for other arts, especially watercolor, oil painting, printmaking, sculpture (relief). In addition, for graphic design, it is also the necessary foundation for sketching. Although drawing is regarded as a two-dimensional art that does not require color or a third dimension, it also implies both. The sketch is the final product of the artist's work and can also serve as the basis for a copy or imitation, but it is unique by its nature. Although all kinds of art do not necessarily require sketching first, sketching is the basis of all ornamental art. When painting, an outline is often drawn in advance as a draft, and then rendered with color. When the artwork is completed, the sketch is often covered up or destroyed. Therefore, sketching is just a technical preparation. By the end of the 14th century, drawing was no longer just an accessory but an independent art. It has a wide range of expression: it can express volume, space, depth, substance and movement. After the Renaissance, sketching no longer only has a practical status, but has become a work of art that represents human creative ability.

3. Sketching Tools

There are many types of sketching tools, such as stone pens, charcoal pens, stylus pens, chalks, brushes, pencils and pens; drills and gold steel are also useful Stone painting. The different tools are related to the nature and composition of the sketch, and the tools can also affect the painter's mood and skills.

The choice of tools depends on the artistic effect the artist wants to achieve. It is generally believed that dry brush is suitable for making clear lines, and water brush is suitable for expressing flat surfaces; delicate brush strokes can be applied with a brush, while vast fields can be outlined with pencil or chalk. Charcoal pencils can be used for both. In terms of the size of the work, large-scale sketches are suitable for drawing with charcoal, and outlines, echoes, etc. can be studied and analyzed in detail over a long period of time. As for pencils, they are suitable for smaller sizes and are rarely used for large-scale pencil drawings, while pen drawings are smaller and are often used more in illustrations.

The monochrome expression of sketch makes the tools very casual, and several tools can often be used in combination to create a variety of picture effects, so it is a very broad world.

(1) Pencil Pencil is the simplest and most convenient tool. Beginners often start with pencil sketching. The main reason is that pencil can be very precise and certain in line modeling, and can be modified more casually. Being able to carve out details more deeply and meticulously is due to strict physical requirements and in-depth and repeated research. At the same time, there are many types of pencils, including hard and soft, deep and light, which are relatively complete and can draw more tones. The color of the pencil is easy to express many silver-gray levels in the tones, and is more effective for basic training operations such as plaster. Well, it is easier for beginners to master, so it is more suitable for use at the beginning of basic training. The existing domestic pencils are divided into two types, with HB as the middle line, and the changes to soft and dark colors are B to 6B. In order to better meet the needs of painting, there are 7B-8B, which we call painting pencils. HB has a hard development from H to 6H, most of which are used for precision design and other professional uses. Because there are many types, pencils can well express rich light and dark tones.

(2) Charcoal pen: The charcoal pen should be neither brittle nor hard, the charcoal rod should be burned thoroughly, soft and black, and the charcoal rod should be soft and sand-free.

(3) Fountain pen: including all tap water type hard nib pens. You can also use a pen that you use for daily writing. Generally, you need to do a little processing. Use small pliers to bend the tip of the pen inward about 30 degrees to make the front writing thin and smooth, and the back writing thickness can be controlled freely.

(4) Paper: white, thick and clean paper with paper texture. Pencil drawing paper should not have a thick texture, and charcoal drawing paper should not have a smooth surface, while pen drawing paper should have a smooth surface and a certain degree of water absorption.

(5) Drawing board: Smooth and seamless plywood is the best. If you are painting while standing, you should also prepare an easel.

(6) Eraser: Flat, soft square eraser is preferred.

(7) Pencil sharpeners, thumbtacks, cleaning cloths and other tools are available for backup
