The origin of renting a wife

Thailand's "rental wives" began during the Vietnam War. The rented wives must be able to speak fluent English, live with the "employer", and serve as companions, translators and tour guides, but the price is very low.

As of 2013, rental Thai wives only received 8,000 baht (approximately US$267) per month. Therefore, some retired Westerners have gone to Thailand to retire, renting apartments and hiring Thai women as "temporary wives." In tourist cities such as Bangkok and Chiang Mai, rented wives can be seen almost everywhere. However, some unlucky ones spent all their money on their "temporary wives", or were blackmailed by "temporary wives" and then abandoned. They were unable to pay for food and accommodation, and they had no money to buy a return ticket. Moreover, many of them lost their passports and were unable to do so.
