Is it reasonable for tour guides to force tourists to shop?

I once met a very annoying tour guide who was very forceful about our shopping. My friends and I were traveling at that time. We joined a tour group, and this tour guide was one of the organizers of the tour group.

The tour guide introduced us to some shops at the beginning and told us that we could buy local specialties and souvenirs in these shops. I thought this was normal at the time, because in my previous travel experiences, tour guides often introduced some shopping locations.

However, once we arrived at the store, the guided tour started to become very mandatory. He kept pushing us to buy stuff and even used some deceptive tactics to get us to buy more stuff. He said the items were limited edition, only available locally, and would be sold out soon. He also claimed that he had special contact with the store owner and could give us a discount, but only on that day.

My friends and I felt very uncomfortable at this time. We didn’t want to buy those things, but we didn’t want to offend the tour guide. We tried expressing our wishes to the tour guide but he was very impatient and started to get angry. Eventually, we gave in and bought something even though we didn't need it.

After returning to the hotel, my friends and I felt very angry and dissatisfied. We believe this tour guide's behavior was unethical and he clearly wanted to take advantage of our shopping to earn a commission. We decided to complain to the tour group's management about the tour guide's behavior.

After the complaint, the management of the tour group attached great importance to our opinions and dealt with the tour guide seriously. They acknowledged that this was inappropriate conduct by a tour guide and promised to take steps to ensure that this does not happen again.

Although this incident made my friends and I feel very unhappy, we also learned some lessons from it. We are now more wary of similar forced shopping behaviors in travel, and will be more determined to safeguard our rights and interests.
