Xinmin Paleozoological Fossil Group Site, 110 kilometers away from the ancient city of Panxian County, is located in Yangquan Village, Xinmin Township. It is part of the Wumengshan National Geopark and is also The earliest group of marine reptile fossils discovered so far in Guizhou is about 240 million years old. Discovery began in 1999, and a formal scientific excavation project was launched in 2004. This is a paleontological fossil stratum that is mainly composed of complete and abundant marine reptile fossils, and also contains multi-category biological fossil groups such as lepidodont fish, dragon fish, cephalopods, pterosaurs, and brachiopods. The fossil was produced in the upper section of the Guanling Formation in the Middle Triassic. Marine reptile fossils mainly include mixed ichthyosaurs, phantosaurs, and protosaurs. They are rich in genera and species, well-preserved, and huge in number. It is the oldest known Middle Triassic marine reptile community in the world and has been named Pan County fauna. The Panxian fauna fossils supplement the early chain in the evolution of marine reptiles. Now the People's Government of Liupanshui City and the School of Earth and Space Sciences of Peking University have jointly established the "Panxian Xinmin Marine Animal Research Workstation" to carry out the excavation, protection and research of marine animals and prepare to build a "geoscience popularization education base". The emergence of Panxian fauna fossils interprets the underwater world of Panxian 240 million years ago and tells the story of mankind's more ancient culture.
