Why is Zhangjiakou Chengde City one of the big cities?

Zhangjiakou City is the central city in northwest Hebei, a transportation hub connecting Beijing and Tianjin and Shanxi and Inner Mongolia. During the eighth year of Jiajing's reign, Zhang Zhen opened a small gate in the north city wall, called the "Little North Gate". Because the gate was as small as a mouth and Zhang Zhen built it, it was called "Zhangjiakou". Chengde City is one of the first batch of national historical and cultural cities.
