Where is Nanjing Guanyin Pavilion located?

Nanjing Guanyin Pavilion is a cultural tourist attraction.

The Guanyin Pavilion is located in the east of Shogunate Mountain in the northwest of Nanjing City. There are limestone mountains along the river. During the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty, a Guanyin Pavilion was built beside the mountain, hence the name Guanyin Mountain. During the reign of Emperor Yingzong of the Ming Dynasty, a temple was built due to the pavilion and was named Hongji Temple. Later, it was combined with Yongji Temple and became a major ancient temple in Nanjing. As soon as you enter the temple gate, you will see that the hall is under the mountain. It is about ten feet deep, hollow and bottomless, with a wooden niche as a niche. There is a stone tablet in front of the couplet, which imitates the image of Guanyin painted by Wu Daozi.

Due to the age, the temple has become dilapidated, but the Guanyin Pavilion still stands beside the river, as if it is falling. Looking out of the window, you can see the plain wilderness, the endless river, and the wonder of "12 caves in the rock mountain" in the mountains.

The Yangtze River Guanyin Scenic Area is divided into eight sub-scenic areas along the way: Guanyin Pavilion, Baizilin, Shijingyuan, Toutai Cave, Ertai Cave, Qingyuan Square, Santai Cave, and Fanyin Garden, which are dedicated to holy statues. There are many Avalokitesvara statues with different themes, including Avalokitesvara Avalokitesvara, Avalokitesvara Avalokitesvara, Avalokitesvara Avalokitesvara, Medicine Avalokitesvara, Dragon Head Avalokitesvara, Avalokitesvara Avalokitesvara, Water Moon Avalokitesvara, and Treasures Avalokitesvara. The painted murals focus on the Guanyin culture that has existed in China for thousands of years. The scenic area is divided into two parts: the east and west parts. The east part is divided into five parts, namely Guanyin Pavilion, Baizilin, Shijingyuan, Toutai Cave, and Ertai Cave; the west part is divided into three parts, namely Qingyuan Square and Santai Cave. , Fanyin Garden. "Avalokitesvara" is a free translation of Sanskrit. The literal explanation is the Bodhisattva who "observes the voices of people in the world" and is one of the four great Bodhisattvas. It is said that in order to avoid Li Shimin's taboo word "Shi" in the Tang Dynasty, the word "Shi" was omitted, and it was shortened to "Guanyin". In addition to itself, Guanyin has thirty-two incarnations, each of which has its own different meaning. Our scenic spot currently enshrines more than ten incarnations of Guanyin. Each Guanyin is unique and represents various good wishes.

Temple legend

To the west of the beautiful Yanziji in Nanjing, there is the famous Guanyin Pavilion, also known as the Seven Pillars. It is built on the mountain and faces the vast Yangtze River. The curved corners are simple and elegant; visitors feel like entering a fairyland when they come here.

Tourists may ask: Why was a Guanyin Pavilion built here? There is a magical legend among them.

It is said that there was an animal in ancient China called a dragon. There are good and evil dragons. The one with the two horns on his head is a real dragon, a good dragon. This dragon has a gentle and kind temperament. It can control the wind, clouds and rain, bringing benefits to the world and benefiting mankind. The one with one horn or no horns growing on its head is a dragon, a ferocious dragon. This dragon has a violent and ferocious temperament. It often has vicious attacks, stirs up troubles, causes disasters in the world, and harms mankind.

In very early times, a dragon appeared in the Jiangsu area. This dragon often moves in Hongze Lake. Due to its troubles, floods often occurred in the Hongze Lake area. Many fields were flooded and countless people drowned. When the Jade Emperor in heaven learned about this, he was both saddened and angry. He immediately summoned Guanyin Bodhisattva and ordered: "Go to the human world and find out clearly what kind of monster is causing clouds and rain, causing tens of thousands of living beings to die. Once you find out, imprison it and never let it harm the world again!"

Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva accepted the Jade Emperor's will, rode on the auspicious clouds, left the heaven, disguised herself as various characters, and searched everywhere in the world.

At that time, the evil-doing dragon was causing trouble in the Hongze Lake area for several days and nights. It felt tired all over and its mood was too boring; it wanted to wander around the lake shore and find some other happy places. So, he rushed out of the lake and swam towards the lake shore.

At this time, in a small town on the shore of Hongze Lake, there were many stalls selling things in and outside the streets. On a path along the lake embankment, an old man with a white beard came to the market to sell water, carrying a load of water. After the old man put down the water basket, he shouted loudly: "Selling cold water, selling hot water? Who will buy it, who will drink it!" As soon as he stopped shouting, the people nearby said with dissatisfaction: "You old guy! It’s really annoying; it’s rained so much these days, who’s going to buy your water?”

The old man with the white beard laughed and said, “Everyone has something to sell, and everyone has something to buy.” . If you don’t believe it, someone will always come to buy it!”

Sure enough, an old lady came over to the old man. She carried a bamboo basket in her left hand with various flowers in it. She walked up to the old man and said, "Can you please give me some water?" The old water seller said nonchalantly: "You want some water, okay, how much do you want?"

"I I don’t need much.” The old lady took out a small porcelain bottle from the bamboo basket, placed it on the ground, and then said, “Old sir, just fill this small bottle up!”

The old man with the white beard. He sneered and said, "You just need this little water." He picked up a bucket and poured it into the small bottle. I felt strange when I poured it upside down. I emptied all the water in the bucket, but the small bottle was not full yet. The old man was shocked and thought: "This old woman has come with bad intentions!" He turned around quickly and jumped into Hongze Lake behind him. He heard a "plop" and disappeared. It turns out that this old man is the transformed dragon.

This old woman was transformed by Guanyin. She also lifted her body, soared into the sky, and flew away on the clouds.

The dragon that caused harm to the world jumped into the water and desperately escaped from Hongze Lake, then swam along the South Canal into the Yangtze River, and then went upstream; after running away all day in the morning, he was exhausted and arrived. At dusk, he emerged from the water, transformed into a scholar, and landed on the south bank of the river.

When he came to Yanziji Street, he felt very hungry, so he walked into a small restaurant and shouted: "Shop, if you have anything delicious, cook it quickly!"

A man with a white waistband The old man in an apron came out of the inner room and said: "Sir, you came too late. The delicious food has been sold out. At this time, we can only order big meat noodles!"

"Okay. , just give me the big meat noodles! Hurry up!" the dragon urged.

After a while, the old man from the restaurant brought a large bowl of steaming meat noodles. When the dragon smelled the delicious smell, he opened his mouth wide and began to eat. As soon as he took a mouthful, he couldn't go down the esophagus. He fell to the ground. He looked up and was shocked. He saw that the old man in the hotel had revealed his true form. It was Guanyin Bodhisattva standing in front of him. He grabbed the iron chain with one hand and said: "I worship the Jade Emperor. I’m going to catch you, this beast that is endangering the world!”

Then he locked the dragon in the pond in Santai Cave in the west to eliminate a great harm to the world. To this day, there is still an iron chain that locked the dragon in the pond in Santai Cave, which has become a rare historical relic.

To express their gratitude and commemorate the kindness of Master Guanyin, the villagers here built the Guanyin Pavilion, also known as the Seven Pillars, just to the west of Yanziji. Back then, when the villagers were building the Guanyin Pavilion, they also thought of the Jade Emperor's favor. They built a Jade Emperor Pavilion on the top of Santai Cave and carved a statue of the Jade Emperor. Zhu Yuanzhang, the founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty, paid great attention to the psychology of the people when building the eighteen gates of the outer city, and named a gate here "Guanyin Gate". The remaining Guanyin Pavilion was rebuilt in the Qing Dynasty.

Now, in order to restore the original style of the Guanyin Pavilion, the Yanziji Park Management Office has sculpted statues of Sakyamuni and Guanyin, adding a new style to this scenic spot.
