Why was Lin Zexu exiled?

Reason: During the Opium War, in the imperial court of Beijing, especially Zhang Mu, the highest-ranking minister, was a fanatical maintainer of the status quo, and he was frightened by Lin Zexu's tough policy towards Britain. Lin Zexu was dismissed on the grounds that "improper negotiations with Britain have caused a serious situation." Lin Zexu was exiled to Yili, Xinjiang.

After being blocked, the British army went north along the coast, captured Dinghai on July 5, and arrived in Dagukou, Tianjin on August 9, threatening Beijing. At this time, Emperor Daoguang panicked and urged the governor of Zhili, Qishan, to "make peace". He also ordered Ilib, the governor of the two rivers, to find out whether the British army captured Dinghai because of "cutting off its trade" or "burning its opium", with the intention of using Lin Zexu as a "scapegoat".

Since then, all kinds of framing, blows and accusations have fallen on Lin Zexu. Qishan is the backbone of the compromise faction, and will certainly not miss this opportunity to frame and attack Lin Zexu. He claimed that only Lin Zexu was dissatisfied with Britain. As long as the Qing court punished Lin Zexu, all problems could be solved.

In the meantime, Lin Zexu appeared twice and boldly stated the rationality and justice of banning smoking and resisting Britain. Daoguang Emperor turned his face and accused Lin Zexu of talking nonsense.

On September 29th, 20th year of Daoguang, Daoguang wrote a letter to remove Lin Zexu, and ordered him to "submit it to the Ministry for strict discussion and come to Beijing for discussion". 10 year10.25, Lin zexu received another official document from the official department, informing him to stay in Guangzhou for the time being, waiting for the interrogation and punishment of the new imperial envoy Bolzigit Qishan.

In the twenty-first year of Daoguang (184 1), in May of 1, Lin Zexu received another imperial edict: he was reduced to a fourth-level minister and went to Zhenhai, Zhejiang Province to wait for the imperial edict. After arriving in Zhenhai, Lin Zexu actively participated in the local coastal defense construction, trying to "make meritorious deeds and atone". Soon, Yishan, the general who inherited Qishan, was defeated in the battle with the British army.

In order to excuse himself, he even rumoured that Britain was willing to talk, and Lin Zexu was the only person they hated. The implication is that Lin Zexu must be punished again before the British can call a truce.

Daoguang Emperor longed for peace, so he once again blamed Lin Zexu for Guangzhou's defeat, saying that he did not actively plan defense when he was in Guangzhou, so that Yishan was overwhelmed after the British attacked. On June 28th, Daoguang issued a decree to remove Lin Zexu's "four titles" and "send him back to Yili, Xinjiang for atonement".
