Chaoshan area, that is, eight towns in Chaozhou, referred to as Chaoshan for short, is a general term for Shantou, Chaozhou and Jieyang.

It is a region with Chaoshan people as the main ethnic group and the birthplace of Chaoshan people and Chaoshan businessmen all over the world.

Chaoshan was called Chaozhou in previous dynasties, Chaozhou in Sui and Tang Dynasties, Ten Kingdoms in Five Dynasties, Chaozhou in Song Dynasty, Chaozhou Road in Yuan Dynasty and Chaozhou House in Ming and Qing Dynasties.

Chaoshan three cities belong to the same administrative division from ancient Chaozhou to 199 1 Shantou.
