The lake is slightly northwest-southeast, with an area of ??50.1 square kilometers and a reservoir capacity of 2.252 billion cubic meters. Lugu Lake is a plateau fault dissolution subsidence lake and a tributary of the Yalong River, a tributary of the Jinsha River, the main stream of the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. The Litang River system is the upper source of the Xiaojin River and flows through the Yalong River to the Jinsha River.
The Lugu Lake Basin is located in the Yongning Basin. It is the third largest deep-water lake in China. There is a small island in the lake. The Mosuo, Yi and Pumi people mainly live around Lugu Lake, and Mongolians live along the coast. There are 7 ethnic groups with about 13,000 people. Geological Structure
Tectonically, the Lugu Lake area belongs to the intersection zone of the Hengduan Mountain Block and the Kangdian-Taipei Oblique Zone. It was formed in a relatively new period and was a neotectonic movement in the mid-Quaternary period. Formed by the dissolution of external forces, Lugu Lake is a plateau fault dissolution subsidence lake, consisting of a northwest-southeast fault and two east-west faults.
The Lugu Lake basin belongs to the Bayan Har geosyncline area and the Jinsha River fold system. The Paleozoic and Mesozoic strata are developed in the lake area. Only the gravel layer around the lake can be seen in the Quaternary strata. There is no typical lake sedimentation. Peripheral cliff triangles and U-shaped glacial valleys can be seen everywhere. The lake basin was formed by fault depression and glaciation. Due to the influence of tectonic movements, the lake basin is surrounded by mountains and there are many peninsulas and headlands on the lakeshore.
