Naqu is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Xizang Autonomous Region, located in the northern part of Tibet and the hinterland of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It is the source of the Yangtze River, Nujiang River, Lhasa River and Gong Yi. It borders Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Qinghai Province, Changdu City in the east, Lhasa City, Shigatse City and Linzhi City in the south, and Ali District in the west.
Naqu has a total area of 430,000 square kilometers, and governs 1 1 county (district),1/4 township (town) and1/90 village (neighborhood) committees with a total population of 500,000. The geographical location is about 83 degrees 55 minutes to 95 degrees 5 minutes east longitude and 29 degrees 55 minutes to 36 degrees 30 minutes north latitude. The central part of Naqu is hilly and mountainous, with a high altitude in the northwest, and the northern part belongs to Tanggula Mountain area, which is a typical plateau and mountainous terrain.

The northern Tibetan Plateau is one of the regions with the worst climatic conditions in Tibet, and it is a typical sub-cold zone.
