Sedum australis-magical Sedum australis

Exquisite and petite figure and alien-like flowers have quickly become cute pets for balcony lovers. Does such a mini magical south fascinate you?

Mini King Monti Nanjingtian

When something gets smaller, a feeling of pity arises. This is true for inanimate objects, especially for living plants.

Monanthes is a very popular small Sedum family. There are more than 10 species in this genus, which are endemic to the Canary Islands and Salvation Islands in the North Atlantic in northwest Africa, and some species are distributed in Madeira Islands. The diversity distribution center of Sedum is located in Tenerife Island of Canary Islands, which is the origin of 7 species of Sedum. On Fuerteventura Island and Lanzarote Island, only 1 species of Datura stramonium is produced.

The common name of Monanthes is Greek, which means single flower (written in Latin as monanthous). It is related to Sempervivum, Greenovia, Aichryson (no Chinese translation yet) and Aeonium, which is obviously reflected in their similar flower patterns. This genus is frost-intolerant. The life forms and growth forms of different species are obviously different. For example, M.icterica, which is quite different from other species in this genus, is a perennial of 1, while other plants in this genus are perennial. Sedum: a rare case of species migration. After their ancestors colonized the island from land, their descendants moved from the island to land (data from Wikipedia).

The flowering period of Manan is mostly long, generally from late winter to early summer, lasting 3 ~ 4 months. Delicate yellow-green flowers are blooming in succession, which is very popular.

At present, the following four species of Sedum can be seen in Chinese mainland:

Monan, Anago

The name anagensis is named after Anaga Mountain, one of the places of origin, which is 600 ~ 1000m above sea level. As the largest species of Molina, it can grow to about 15 cm high. 1.5 ~ 2 cm long leaves are shaped like small shuttles, with a small groove in the center of the leaves, large leaf spacing and obvious stems, which are easy to grow in groups and grow into clusters of lovely small shrubs. I like an environment with higher humidity. Different from other kinds of konjac, the stamens are very beautiful red when they bloom.

This product is often called Banana Magic South now. It's really similar. Sowing is relatively simple, and it is easy to carry at seedling stage.

Monanthesbrachycaulon, the magical scene of the dance

This is the most common, cheapest and most robust magic south Sedum on the market at present. The name brachycaulon means short-stemmed. The leaves are like small spoons with round heads and short handles, which are distributed in a rosette shape. There are obvious signs of growth in all seasons except summer. In the cool season of spring and autumn, there will be a lot of reproduction, and new buds will be drawn out from the center of leaves in a straight line. Sedum globosum can tolerate a little higher humidity. Some fans in Beijing planted it on absorbent stones to make bonsai, which is also very beautiful, but the plant type is inevitably loose. The petiole is very short, the leaves are round and thick, and the overall plant shape is very compact when curing outdoors in full sunlight.

Because the root system is very shallow, the ball magic south can also be planted in a small cover, such as this one.

The magic of the south wall

The name Mulally means to be born on the wall. The leaves of Runnan are like small particles covered with sugar and covered with thorns, and the small leaves form a rose shape with a diameter of about 1 cm. Like Sedum globosum, it is also a strong variety in this genus and needs high illumination. It is best to plant it in the open air, and it is easy to grow white indoors. When the temperature difference is large, the leaves appear charming purple.

This product is a pot cracker, and it is also a big anthomaniac. When it comes to flowers, it is as hysterical as a psychopath.

A magical leafy south.

The name leafy plant means leafy. Some fans call it Paris Manan, which is also very appropriate. Its leaves are piled into small towers, which really means heavy buildings. The figure of the multi-leaf magic south is smaller than that of the other three magic south in this paper. Very regular diamond-shaped leaves are closely gathered in the center, and the stems are basically invisible, and the posture is very cute. But it belongs to the type that can't stand the humid and sultry sauna weather seriously, so you should be extra careful in summer.

My earliest leaf magic south was a gift from my friend in BergiusBotanicGarden, Stockholm, Sweden. When the staff of the Botanical Garden introduced it, they said it was a Sedum plant unique to Scandinavia. Because the peninsula is relatively independent, this species has not spread out. Because of the cold weather in northern Europe, the leaves of this species have become like this to adapt to the environment. This little thing grows very fast in the cold season. At first, it is shriveled and lifeless, and soon after it is put in the pot, the leaves begin to grow full. The growth in winter is extremely pungent, and lateral buds keep popping out from the leaves. Molybdenum multiflorum root system is thin and shallow, so it is best not to use pots too deep, and the height of about 7 cm is enough. In addition, the particle size of the substrate must be small enough to be loose and breathable. I will add a large number of medical stones with a diameter of 1 ~ 2 mm to the growth layer to facilitate root climbing.

Unfortunately, the year before last, I couldn't adapt to the completely unventilated floor-to-ceiling glass enclosed balcony. In Nanjing in summer, the lowest temperature is more than 30 degrees, which is extremely hot. I learned a lesson last summer. I put it in an open window during the day and close the window at night but turn on the air conditioner. As a result, I passed the summer without any loss. Similarly, ventilation is the key for Sedum plants to spend the summer. Compared with the delicate and leafy magic south, the other three magic south are easy to raise. Nothing special except strong ventilation in summer.

My matrix is still about 1/6 of chaff and peat, and 5/6 of various particles, including honeycomb cinder, sapphire, light stone, ceramsite, perlite and pebbles. In addition, it is paved with medical stone and cobblestones with a diameter of 2 mm All substrates should be soaked in water before use, and then sterilized in a microwave oven for 20 minutes to kill possible pests and diseases.

If you leave it outdoors, water it about once every two weeks. When planted indoors, it is usually watered only once every four weeks to help control plant types. Used to soaking water in a basin. The water surface is about 2/3 of the height of the basin. I can take it out in a few seconds to keep the surface of the substrate dry all the year round. In summer, Polyrhabditis needs to be controlled, so it can be soaked in water for a while and then taken out to keep the basin bottom moist. The water supply of the other three Tenebrio molitor species in summer is only slightly less than normal. If it is a seedling sown by seeds, Nanjing basically does not need to cut off water in summer. German enthusiasts suggest that the winter temperature of Sedum should not be lower than 10℃. In fact, the temperature around 5℃ is absolutely no problem, and the water supply can be normal. Indoor planting, the environment is difficult to be lower than 5℃. When planting in the open air in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai, water must be cut off below 0℃, and water supply can only continue when the temperature rises above 0℃, unless it is moved back indoors.

It's extremely easy to plug in the leaves and the ball devil of Magic South. It may be incredible to say that the leaves of Sedum globosum, which are at most 2 mm in size and accidentally knocked out, will soon be uprooted and grow into new plants in the right season after falling on the surface of the substrate. The leaves of the leafy magic south are too compact to break off and insert. But the leaves of Anago Manan are so loose that it is obvious to lose a leaf, so I have never tried it. Interested friends can try it themselves. Sedum species suitable for leaf insertion are very simple, just keep the leaf base (petiole) intact as far as possible (it doesn't matter if some varieties are incomplete), then lay them flat on the surface of the substrate and wait patiently for it to take root and sprout. There is no need to insert the base of the leaf into the substrate, which is easy to rot. After taking root, you can sprinkle some small particles to bury the root system. It doesn't matter if you are too lazy to sprinkle, the roots will plunge into the basin by themselves.

Stem cutting is also the most common propagation method, which is suitable for Magic South with obvious stem segments. Cut off the lateral buds, dry them for 2 ~ 3 days, and dry them in moist soil. Stem-less varieties, such as Molybdenum multiflorum, can be cut off around the middle of the plant with dental floss or fishing line, and the upper part needs to be aired for 2 ~ 3 days, and then planted in a pot in wet soil.

My favorite breeding method is sowing. It is felt that Sedum plants require high seed freshness when sowing. Although German fans say that some seeds of Sedum can be kept fresh for 5 years under suitable conditions, I don't seem to have this experience so far. Perhaps the Sedum seeds purchased from abroad broke the so-called suitable preservation conditions in the process of long-distance mailing. Therefore, I still like the way of harvesting and sowing. In winter, the temperature is too low, so I put a reptile heating pad (available online) on the bottom of the basin to create a warm environment. Pay attention to ventilation and cooling in summer. If it really doesn't work, use a breeze ceiling fan. Sedum planting is basically the same, please refer to the mountain rose, so I won't go into details here.

To tell the truth, in the eyes of the sower, the beauty of seedlings is better than all the flowers in the world.
