The Hengjiang storm in the poem symbolizes the "dark and decadent political situation" and "the precarious fate of the country", and embodies the "imminent crisis situation in which chaos will start and disaster will start". According to Zhan's Translation of Li Baiquan, these six poems traveled to Yang in the 13th year of Tianbao (754), which implied the poet's worries about the political situation in the last years of Tianbao.

An Qi believes that this group of poems was written by Li Bai in the autumn of the twelfth year of Tianbao (AD 753) when he passed through Hengjiangpu on his way back from Youzhou to Xuancheng. He believes that the Hengjiang storm symbolizes the Anshi rebellion and implies the poet's anxiety about the crisis in the Tang Dynasty.
