Tongzhaipu, formerly known as Xuyou Town, also known as Tongzhai Shop, was built in the Sui Dynasty. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, a delivery station (post station) was set up.

During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it belonged to Taoyuan Bao and Tonghe Bao of Tang County. In 1913, it belonged to Xianyuan County. In 1921, it was established as a district. In 1923, it belonged to Tanghe County. In 1945, it was changed into a district and a township. It belonged to Tangxi County in 1948. In March 1949, Tangnan, Tangbei and Tangxi counties were merged into Tanghe County. Tongzhaipu Central Township was established in 1956, Tongzhaipu People's Commune was established in 1958, and districts were established in 1962, with jurisdiction over Baiqiu, Zhangdian, Liubinqiao, Tonghe, Dongzhangying and other small communes. In 1968, the district was withdrawn, Liu Binqiao People's Commune was merged, and Tongzhaipu People's Commune was rebuilt. In 1983, it was changed to a township. In October 1996, the township was withdrawn and a town was established.
