How to prevent old elm furniture from cracking and repairing

The north belongs to the temperate monsoon climate, and the climate in the north is relatively dry, which makes the old elm furniture much more fragile. Especially when heating is turned on in the north in winter, the indoor climate is dry, and elm furniture is easy to crack in such a dry environment.

Wood cracking is generally divided into several types, surface cracking: refers to surface cracking. Surface crack refers to the surface crack of the original wood itself or the finished wood.

Internal crack: Internal crack. Internal cracking is also often called honeycomb cracking. Internal cracking occurs in the later stage of drying, and sometimes in the storage period of dried materials. It is usually not easy to find from the outside of wood, but it can be judged by the depression on the surface of wood when it is serious. Internal cracking is caused by tensile stress of wood inner layer.

End crack: end crack. End cracking is limited to the end face of wood, or extends to one or both sides of the end, the latter is usually called splitting.

Wheel crack: this kind of crack develops along the growth ring direction and often extends to several adjacent growth rings. Wheel cracks generally occur in the early stage of drying and appear on the end face of wood. As drying progresses, the cracks deepen and become longer. Sometimes it happens inside, but it happens in the later stage of drying, which is caused by serious internal tensile stress. Wet expansion and dry shrinkage deformation of wood, volume shrinkage of dry wood and volume expansion of wet wood. The expansion and contraction of wood volume may cause the deformation and warping of wood. The same is true of external force, gravity extrusion deformation and warping.

Because the moisture content of elm is not balanced with the moisture content of the external environment. The comprehensive factors of external natural environment lead to high water content, and excessive absorption of external water by wood will cause furniture to swell and warp. The moisture content of old elm furniture is higher than the comprehensive factors of the external natural environment, and the wood releases moisture to the external natural environment.

Will cause external air resistance, dry natural environment, will absorb water from the inside of elm, too much will cause furniture cracking. This is a problem between the moisture content of wood drying and the moisture content of external natural environment. When the moisture content of wood is greater than the external natural environment, water molecules in wood move into the atmosphere, that is, when the moisture content of wood is lower than the fiber saturation point, it continues to dry and its volume shrinks. The moisture absorption of dried wood will stop when it reaches the fiber saturation point with the increase of water absorption. When the moisture content of wood is above the fiber saturation point and only free water changes, the volume of wood remains unchanged. Due to the non-uniformity of wood structure, with the expansion and contraction of wood volume, wood deformation and warping may be caused.

Therefore, in dry weather, it is necessary to keep goldfish indoors, put green plants and turn on humidifiers. In wet weather, it is necessary to put desiccant indoors. When placing old elm furniture, don't cling to the wall. Because the wall belongs to a dark place, there will be some damp phenomena. If it is close to the wet wall, it will make the wood absorb moisture and expand, and it is easy to crack and mold, so it should be dehumidified frequently, usually once every half month. This can prevent elm furniture from cracking.
