Body appearance and functions

NEX-F3 overall The appearance is slightly larger than the previous C3, and it is not as rounded, but leans towards the NEX-7's obviously more angular style. As for which one looks better, this is a matter of opinion, at least we felt good when we first saw it. This time the F3 is available in three colors: red, white and black, all at the same price. Its handle design has also changed to some extent. It is not the same height as the fuselage as before, but shorter than the fuselage. The feel is closer to the NEX-5 series. Since the lens group of the NEX system is not particularly rich, many players currently purchase NEX bodies and mainly use them to adapt to other bayonet lenses. When using relatively compact lenses such as the Contax G series to manually focus, there are When twisting the MF focusing ring at the back, the fingers of the left hand are more likely to be blocked by the right hand holding the handle. Since the handle of the previous generation product C3 is relatively small, this situation rarely occurs, but the higher protruding part of the handle on the F3 will still block your fingers. This does not mean that it cannot be used, but it is just that it is difficult for some hands. It's a little uncomfortable for older friends.

The 180-degree flippable 920,000-pixel LCD on the back is a major change in the F3, which means that the LCD can be flipped to the front for selfies. After flipping 180 degrees, press the shutter, and a 3-second countdown prompt will be displayed on the LCD facing you to let you pose. This feature should be very popular with girls. Another point to mention is its bottom design. Friends who are familiar with NEX-C3 should know that its SD card slot is separate from the battery compartment. To open the SD card slot cover, you need to lift the battery compartment cover at the same time. However, This problem no longer exists on the F3. The battery compartment and card slot can be opened independently without affecting each other.

At the same time, we think that Sony has not done much publicity about the two most noteworthy upgrades of the F3, which are the significant improvements in battery life. It can take more than 400 photos at a time without running out of battery. Don't worry, it can be charged through the USB interface, which is a very convenient feature when traveling. In addition, there is an additional expansion slot on the top, which can be connected to an external EVF viewfinder model FDA-EV1S. Customers who choose to purchase the F3 during the reservation period can buy it at a discounted price of HK$1,990, which does not seem to be cheap... However, one thing worth comforting is that you will now find a built-in flash on the top of the fuselage, which was not available on the previous NEX Most of them rely on external modules to achieve this. Regardless of the necessity of built-in flash here, our point of view has always been: having something is always better than nothing.

In terms of controllability, the F3 is still significantly different from NEX’s previous machines. If you are an old DSLR player and want to buy an F3 as a backup camera, it may take some getting used to at the beginning. The mid-to-low-end products in the NEX series do still have relatively poor controllability. I remember that when the NEX was first launched, it was criticized by users for being too inhumane in its controls. Fortunately, there were some improvements after subsequent firmware updates. Its control settings are mainly concentrated on the dial on the control panel, and the functions of some keys can be customized. These keys can basically cover the commonly used aperture and ISO selections in A mode. As for other settings, some settings often require Look for it in the secondary menu. Here we are purely talking about the product positioning of F3. Its audience is entry-level users who don’t know much about photography. These users’ requirements for using the camera are often: better image quality and the ability to take photos with clear subjects and blurred backgrounds (many people That’s what they say), the simpler it is to use, the better. It’s best to compose the picture + press the shutter, a two-step fool-proof operation. The machine will look better. That’s where the 3 Series is positioned in the NEX. After adding new additional functions such as clear image zoom and portrait automatic composition, F3 has indeed improved in ease of use, but we think these improvements are not worth it for old C3 users to repurchase F3.

In terms of metering, F3 has been upgraded to the 1200 zone, which has gradually become the standard configuration of Sony imaging products. From a short-term trial experience, it works well in dealing with complex scenes. I haven't encountered any problems with the metering, so I can basically rely on it. The focusing speed of the F3 is also quite satisfactory. It is not much different from the previous NEX products. It is sufficient for daily shooting. It is still far behind the phase focusing of DSLR. However, as an entry-level product, we really don’t expect it to be able to focus on it. Get a surprise above.

Video function

F3 also supports 1080P high-definition video shooting this time. In each mode, it can be quickly started through the red video button on the top of the fuselage, and it can be started during the recording process. Focus. This function is improved compared to the 720P high-definition video recording of the previous generation C3, and it has stereo MIC pickup. The specific picture quality is pretty good. We think the more highlight lies in the flippable LCD at the back. There are many creative videos. Shooting viewing angle. In addition, we feel that the OSS anti-shake effect of the matching lens is not very obvious during the recording process.

Image quality performance

Now, let’s focus on the image quality performance of F3. Here we start with the lowest setting, ISO 200. The ISO of NEX-F3 starts from 200. As this gear, theoretically the picture should have the best purity and detail retention, etc., and present the best imaging effect. But in fact, we were surprised to find that the F3's image at the lowest ISO has a very obvious smearing feeling after full-size enlargement, and the detail expression is not good. This smearing feeling is especially obvious in the dark parts of the picture, and it also It is accompanied by a certain amount of noise and poor purity.

After full-size enlargement, the dark part is intercepted

For further verification, we tried to shoot at ISO 200 under good outdoor lighting conditions, and then intercepted the part. From the picture above, it can be clearly seen that many textures are almost unrecognizable, details have been lost, there are traces of the noise reduction algorithm, and obvious noise can be seen. Based on this performance, we weren't satisfied with the F3's low-end purity.

In the higher three gears of ISO 1600, 3200, and 6400, it can be seen that ISO 1600 still has high usability. At 3200, the number of noise points is already large. Pay attention to the dark part on the right, the noise has been It begins to appear in blocks, and as the intensity of noise reduction increases, the loss of details caused by smearing becomes more and more obvious. As for the higher ISO 6400, we recommend using thumbnails.

In the actual shooting scene, the above photo was taken using ISO 3200, and you can see that all the details of the baby's eyelashes have been lost. Therefore, judging from this performance, NEX-F3’s improvement in noise reduction this time is mainly focused on the strength of noise smearing. This relatively shallow noise reduction processing method currently only works in the case of thumbnails. It has a relatively good look and feel, but once it is transferred to a higher resolution playback method, the problem of insufficient detail retention will be exposed. As a newly launched mirrorless product with APS-C format, we believe that its performance in terms of ISO is just a continuation of the previous generation product and does not bring much substantial improvement.
