Who is King Pantuo?
Luoyang's first voyage to the West was the "Yongping Seeking Dharma" of Emperor Han Ming, which was a national activity. The second trip of Zhu Shixing was a personal action of Wei Ganlu in the Three Kingdoms five years later. The third time, in the first year of the Northern Wei Dynasty (5 18 AD), Hu Taihou sent a letter to Song Yun and Huisheng to go west to learn from the scriptures, which was a national action. These three cultural exchanges between China and the West have made indelible contributions to the history of Buddhism, culture and transportation in China, regardless of the personal thoughts and behaviors of the person in charge at that time, but they have objectively played a good social role.
Song Yun and Sheng Hui both wrote their own diaries after they returned to China to learn from Western learning. Yang Xuanzhi's "Luoyang Galand Ji" extracts the contents of these two books, which have been lost. Galand Ji preserved these documents.
I went west to learn the imperial edict and arrived in Khotan via Chiling.
In the winter of November of the first year of the Northern Wei Dynasty, the cold wind was chilly, and there were few pedestrians on the major imperial roads in Luoyang. Just then, a group of more than a dozen people walked out of the western gate of Luoyang city. They are all wrapped in cotton, loaded with horses, and set foot on the road of learning from the West.
This is the mother who sent monks from Chongli Temple and Song Yun, a Dunhuang native living in the north of Luoyang, to the western regions to learn from the scriptures.
Forty days after Huisheng and Song Yun left Luoyang, they arrived at Chiling (now southwest of Tuanjia in Xining, Qinghai/0/30 Li, called Riyala Mountain, also known as Sun Moon Mountain). This is the border of Wei, and Wei has no checkpoints here.
Chiling is called Chiling because there is no vegetation. Birds and mice live in a cave in this mountain. Different species can live together, birds are male and mice are female, which is why people say that birds and mice live in the same cave.
Starting from Chiling, I walked west for 23 days, crossed quicksand, and reached Tuguhun country. Along the way, the weather was cold, snowy, flying sand and stones, looking around, only Tugu Huncheng was slightly warmer than other places. Tuguhun has Chinese characters, just like Wei's. Ethnic customs and political systems are similar to those of western ethnic minorities.
From Tuguhun to the west, 3,500 miles, the self-reliant king of Shanshan City was annexed by Tuguhun. Today, the owner of Shanshan City is General Ningxi, the second son of King Tuyuhun, and the total tribe of 3,000 people resists the Hu people.
From Shanshan to the west, 1645 Li, arrive at Zuomo City. There are always hundreds of residents in the city, and the land is dry, so it is necessary to open ditches to irrigate the land before planting crops. The local people don't know how to plow the land with cows. There are Buddha statues and bodhisattvas painted in the city, but they are not the same as the appearance of the conference semifinals. Visiting ancient things, the locals said that it was painted by Lv Guang when he crusaded against the conference semifinals.
Go west from Zuomo City 1275 miles, and you will arrive at Zuomo City. The flowers and fruits near the city are the same as those in Luoyang, but the houses are made of earth and have a flat roof, which is different from those in Luoyang.
Twenty-two miles west of Night City, we arrived at Hanmo City. There is a big temple about 0/5 mile south of the city/kloc. There are more than 300 monks in the temple. There is a gold statue in the hall, which is 10 feet high. The Buddha statue is beautifully shaped and glittering. It always faces the east station and refuses to look west. Local legend: "This statue was originally flown in from the south. King Khotan saw it himself, made a bow, and transported it back by car. On the way, it was already dark and people stopped to have a rest. Suddenly, the statue disappeared. The king sent for it, but the elephant returned to its original place. The king built a tower nearby and sealed 400 homes for cleaning. If someone in these 400 families gets sick, they will put gold and platinum on the affected part of the image and then immediately recover. Next to this statue, later generations created 10 feet and 6 feet tall statues and many statue towers, even thousands. There are tens of thousands of colorful national flag covers. More than half of Wei's banners were written in official script. Most of them were written in the 19th year of Taihe (AD 495), the 2nd year of Jingming (AD 50 1 year) and the 2nd year of extension (AD 5 13 year). Look at the year number of Yao Xing at the end of Qin Dynasty (AD 390).
Go 878 miles west from Hanmo City and arrive at Khotan Kingdom. The king wore a golden comb crown on his head, and raw silk two feet long and five inches wide hung behind his head as decoration. The majestic guard of honor includes drums, horns, golden pheasants, a pair of bows and arrows, two halberds, five plaques and 100 warriors with swords.
The custom in Khotan Kingdom is that women wear clothes, wear belts and ride fast, just like men. When people die, they put the ashes away and bury them after burning them. Where the ashes are buried, a tower will be built on it. Mourners should cut their hair short and cut their faces with knives to show their condolences. When their hair grows to four inches long, it is normal. Only after the death of the king, don't burn it with fire, put the body in a coffin and bury it in the far field, and set up a temple to commemorate it.
In the past, the kingdom of Khotan did not believe in Buddhism. Once, a semi-finalist of a business group took a shaman named Piluzhou under an apricot tree in the south of the city and confessed to the king, saying, "Now I finally got a foreign shaman under an apricot tree in the south of the city." When the king heard these words, he was very angry, so he went to square it himself at once. Peruzu said to the king, "If the Buddha sends me, let the king build a floating picture and cover it on the basin, so that the king's happiness will be prosperous forever." The king said, "If I see the Buddha today, I will do it at once."
As soon as the king's voice fell, Pilufang rang the bell to inform the Buddha, and Pailuo' Muhou' turned into a Buddha and descended from the air, showing his true colors. After the King of Qi fell to the ground, he ordered a temple to be built under the apricot tree and painted a portrait of Luo Muhou. After the portrait was completed, Luo Muhou suddenly disappeared. Even more convinced, King Khotan built a beautiful house and put the statue in it. The shadow of this overturned basin often goes outside the elegant house, and everyone you meet pays tribute to him. There are still Buddha boots hidden in this refined house, which have not rotted so far. They don't look like leather or silk, and no one can tell.
According to the boundary of the shadow, things are only more than three thousand miles.
Second, cross the two countries, climb the west of the jungle and visit the five countries.
In the second year of Turtle (5 19), he entered Zhu Jubo on July 29th. All the people in this country live in the mountains. There are many miscellaneous grains, but they all eat wheat flour. There is no slaughterhouse here. Meat eaters eat the meat of dead animals. The customs and characters are similar to those of Khotan. The writing is the same as that of Brahmins. All the territory of this country can be visited in five days.
At the beginning of August, we entered the border of Hanpantuo. I walked west for another six days and climbed the green hill. I walked west for three days and arrived at the city of alms bowl. Three days later, I arrived at the mountain. It's very cold here, and there is snow in winter and summer. There is a pool on the mountain, and the dragon is hidden in it. In the past, 300 businessmen stayed by the swimming pool one day. It happened that the dragon got angry and killed all the businessmen at once. When King Pantuo heard about this, he gave up his seat to his son, and he himself went to learn the Brahman mantra from Yuzhi. In four years, he completely mastered the Brahman mantra and returned to the throne after returning home. One day, the king put a spell on the dragon in the pool on the mountain, and the dragon immediately became a man and confessed to the king. The king moved the dragon to the green ridge more than 2000 miles from this pool. The ancient king is the thirteenth ancestor of the present king.
From the kingdom of Hanpantuo to the west, there are all rugged mountain roads. There is a cliff 1000 Li high in Nagsaka, where I really feel the danger of going to heaven. Like Taihang and Mengmen, it is not dangerous compared with here. Hanguan in Xiaoshan and Changban in Longxi are much flatter than here.
Starting from the green ridge, step by step higher and higher. It took four days to reach the summit of Green Ridge. It takes about half a day to get down from the mountainside.
The hometown of Han Pantuo is at the top of the mountain. From the west of Green Ridge, all rivers flow westward. People here say that this is the center of heaven and earth. People always dig a hole by the water for irrigation and farming. They heard that all fields in China are planted by rain and said with a smile, "How can God be the same as you expected?"
There is a Jinmeng River to the east of Hampanto, which flows northeast to shale.
Castle Peak is high and steep, with no vegetation. In August, the weather is already cold, the north wind drives the geese, and the snow falls thousands of miles.
In mid-September, he entered Bohe and China. Here are mountains and deep valleys, and people regard dangerous roads as normal. The place where the king lived in 2000 was regarded as the capital because of the mountain. People's clothes are decorated only with felt. The local land is barren, and the products are not rich, so people are playing the wind in caves. When the snow is tight, people and animals depend on each other. In the southern boundary of Bohe, there is a big snow mountain, which melts early and freezes late, and looks like a jade mountain from a distance.
In early October, I entered a disgusting country. The fields here are very high, and at first glance, the mountains and rivers are clear. Where people live, there are no battlements, mainly nomadic. If you build a house with felt, it will rush to the place with lush water plants with the seasons, but it will be cool in summer and warm in winter. Rural aborigines are illiterate and lack etiquette and music education. They don't know the degree to which the sun and the moon run, there is no annual surplus or leap, and there is no size of the month. It takes only twelve months to calculate a year.
Tired to the country, it has also been contributed by various countries. More than 40 countries, including Diluo in the south, Chile in the north, Hungary in the east and Persia in the west, came to congratulate North Korea. At that time, the king set up a big felt tent, the size of Fiona Fang was forty paces, and the felt tent was used as a wall around it. The king was dressed in brocade and sat on a big bed with four golden phoenix at the foot. When I met Ambassador Wei, I even wrote two letters. At the arranged banquet, a person sings in front of the guests, only singing without music accompaniment.
The princess who hates the country is also dressed in brocade, decorated with five-color rose beads more than eight feet long. When the princess went out, she rode back to the palace and sat on the golden bed. The golden bed consists of a six-toothed white elephant and four lions, followed by other ministers' wives. Hold an umbrella. They also seem to have horns on their heads, which are round and drooping, shaped like treasure lids. From the differences in their clothes, we can also see that their status is high or low. The country that hates foreigners is the most powerful of the four ethnic minority countries. This country does not believe in Buddhism, but worships many foreign gods. They slaughter raw animals and eat with blood. Seven precious items were used. Countries have contributed a lot of foreign goods.
The country of Leda is more than 20,000 miles away from Luoyang, the capital.

It is white and can't see anything. People can achieve peace by offering sacrifices to the Dragon King.

Therefore, all pedestrians stopped going this way as soon as they heard about it.
Three holy places, Duoduo and Wuchang Kingdom.

The king of Uzbekistan is diligent, vegetarian and insists on fasting for a long time. Every morning and evening, I worship Buddha, blow my flute, and advocate coming to the north to accompany me, ranging from pipa to cricket to Xiao Sheng. The king doesn't deal with state affairs until every afternoon. In this country, there is no criminal law to execute people who commit capital crimes, but they are exiled to empty mountains, and anyone can find something to eat and drink to live. For the suspects involved in the case, let them take medicine to distinguish the test with turbidity; According to the seriousness of the crime, a judgment was made at that time. The land is fertile, the population is large, and the products are rich. At night, bells can be heard all over the world. There are all kinds of exotic flowers and grasses growing on the ground, which are continuous in winter and summer. Monks and nuns can pick them at will and make offerings to the Buddha.
When the king saw Song Yun and his party, he said that it was a festival of the right to use from Wei, and he worshipped the imperial edict. Hearing that Empress Wei believed in Buddhism, she immediately crossed her hands to the east, filled with sincerity, and bowed from a distance. A man who knows the Wei language said to Song Yun, "Are you from the source of the sun?" Song Yun replied: "There is a sea in the east of our country, from which the sun comes out, just as the Tathagata said." The king asked again, "Are there any saints in your country?" Song Yun talked about Duke Zhou, Confucius, Zhuangzi, Lao Zi and other great virtues. Speaking of the Silver Palace Jintang on Penglai Mountain, there are many immortals and saints in it. He also said that Guan Ju was good at divination, Hua Tuo was good at treating diseases, and Zuo Ci was good at magic. Such a thing was clearly told to the king. The king said, "As you said, your country is a Buddhist country. One hundred years later, I want to go to your country to take care of my life.
So Song Yun and Sheng Hui walked out of the city together, looking for the remains of the Tathagata. To the east of the water is the place where the Buddha hangs clothes. At first, Tathagata promoted Buddhism and educated the people in Ukyu. When the Dragon King heard this, he was very angry and made trouble. At this time, the Buddha, the monk and the pear were all soaked. After the rain stopped, the Buddha sat under a big stone in the east, basking in the cassock. Although it is old, it is as bright as new. If you don't look straight at the stripes, you can't see clearly, so that every trace is new. At first glance, it seems not obvious; If you sit up straight and pay attention, the lines will gradually become clear. Both the Buddha's sitting place and the clothes drying place have towers to record their events. There is a pool to the west of the water, where the Dragon King is hiding. There is a temple by the pond. There are more than fifty monks in the temple. Every time the dragon king in the pond makes trouble, the king prays for a request to put gold and jade treasures into the pond. These treasures follow the current and then appear for the monks to retrieve. Monks in this temple eat and dress by dragons, and people give them alms. The locals call it Longwang Temple.
Eighty miles north of Wangcheng, there are footprints of Tathagata stepping on a stone, and the locals built a tower to cover it. Where the Tathagata steps on a stone, it is like stepping on mud with water. The measurement result is inaccurate and the duration is short. Now a temple has been built, which can accommodate more than 70 monks. Twenty paces away from Tarnum, there is a spring stone. Buddha used to be quiet. Once, it bit off a poplar branch and carried it to the ground, and it lived. Now it has grown into a big tree, and its name is Broken Building.
There is a Dharma Temple in the north of Wangcheng, where most Buddhist activities are held. There is a tall Buddhist figure, and the monk room is next to its side. There are 6000 golden statues around the floating portrait. Every year, the king holds a ceremony in this temple, where monks from all over China gather. Song Yun and Sheng Hui were very respectful when they saw the monks abstinence and asceticism, so they asked two handmaiden to clean the temple.
It takes eight days to walk the mountain road from the southeast of Wangcheng, which is the place where the Tathagata climbed high and joined the hungry tiger. Here, the mountains are towering, the dangerous peaks go straight into the sky, and high-quality wood and ganoderma lucidum are all over the lush Shan Ye. The springs in the forest are beautiful, colorful and dazzling. Song Yun and Hui Sheng gave up part of their travel expenses and created a floating picture on the top of the mountain, which was carved on a stone with official script to celebrate the achievements of Wei Court. There is a bone-gathering temple on the mountain where more than 300 monks live.
More than a hundred miles south of Wangcheng, Maureen has a place where Tathagata cuts paper and bones for writing. King Ashoka built a tower to cover it. The tower is ten feet high. Where the bone is taken out, the bone marrow flows out and adheres to the stone. Now look at the color of pulp fat, it is still as fat as new.
There is a good mountain 500 miles southwest of Wangcheng. The sweet spring and beautiful fruits there are recorded in the scriptures. The climate in the valley is warm, and the flowers and trees are still green in winter. Meng Chun is coming, the warm wind is blowing, birds are singing spring trees, and butterflies are dancing among the flowers. Song Yunyuan was in a foreign country, because seeing this beautiful scenery aroused the feeling of returning home, and he missed his midgut alone, which led to the recurrence of the old rash. He was gently pressed for more than a month, and finally got the Brahman mantra and recovered.
In the upper part of the mountain, there is a prince stone room in the southeast, with one hole and two caves. Ten steps before Taizi Stone, there was a big stone, which was said that the prince often sat on it. King Ashoka built a tower on it and made an article to record it.
A mile from Tarnum, there is a prince's Cao An. A mile away from the tower and 50 paces down the hill to the northeast, there are men and women who don't want to leave the prince of the tree. Finally, the Brahmins beat them with sticks, bleeding all over the floor. The tree is still growing, and the bleeding place is now a spring.
Three miles west of the stone chamber is the place where the emperor turned into a lion. When the road squatted, Gaimandi. The hairtail and claw marks on the stone are still clearly visible today.
Tuodong in Azhou and the place where Shezi raised blind parents are all tower records.
There are 500 arhat beds in the mountain, in two rows, north and south, sitting opposite each other and facing each other in sequence. There is a big temple with 200 monks. There is a temple in the north of the spring water, and the prince eats it. There are often several donkeys carrying grain up the mountain, and no one drives them. They come and go by themselves, start in the morning and arrive at noon, just in time for lunch. This is what the goddess Vapo told them to do. There used to be a novice monk in this temple who often cleaned the dust. Because he was in a trance, Na Wei came to hold him, and he didn't feel the separation of flesh and blood. There is a place where Wopo fairy dusts Misha. Guo Wei built a temple for the reclining Buddha, in which his image was painted and covered with gold and platinum. On the opposite side of the mountain, there is a female traitor temple built by a mountain hag, where eighty monks live. They say that arhats and banshees often come to feed, sweep the yard and collect firewood. No secular monk can live in a temple. Shaman Daorong of Wei left this place after worshipping, but he dared not stay long.
Four kinds of exotic gandhara
One day in the middle of April in the year of Zheng Guangyuan (AD 250), he entered the kingdom of Gandhara, whose land was similar to that of Ukraine. Formerly known as the Kingdom of Yepolo, it was destroyed by a disgusting country. Therefore, he made Qin Qin king. It has gone through two generations since governing the country. The king is violent by nature, and most of them execute the criminal law of murder; He doesn't believe in Buddhism and can sacrifice to ghosts and gods. People in China are all Brahmins. They worship Buddhism and love reading classics. Suddenly, it is far from acceptable to have such a king. The king relied on his own courage to compete with other small countries for territory and sent troops for three years in succession. The king has 700 elephants, one elephant can carry ten people, each with a knife and hawthorn; He attacked the enemy like a knife tied to his nose. Kings usually stay at the border and don't return to Korea all day. Soldiers are too old to go home. The people have been serving hard labor all the year round, and the people complain a lot.
Song Yun went to the army and declared a letter; However, the king was cruel, arrogant and impolite, and sat down to accept Wei's letter. Song Yun saw that he was a distant minority and could not be conquered. He can only be arrogant and can't be blamed.
The king sent an interpreter to tell Song Yun, "It's hard for you to walk so far, isn't it?"
Song Yun replied; "I, the great Wei Emperor, deeply appreciate the Mahayana Buddhism and seek the scriptures. Although the journey is difficult and dangerous, it can't be said that you are tired. The king personally commanded the three armies and went to the border. When the cold comes and the summer goes, the weather changes suddenly and I don't feel tired. "
The king replied, "I can't surrender to a small country." I am really embarrassed to ask you. "
Song Yun began to think that the king was a minority and could not be accused by etiquette, so that he could sit and accept the imperial edict. Wait until I personally met several times, only to find that he also has human feelings, so I blame him and say:
"The mountains are high and low, the water is big and small, people are on earth, and they are condescending. They all worship Da Wei's letters. Why don't you worship the King alone? "
Qi Weiwang replied: "When I see the great emperor of Wei, I will worship him;" What's strange about sitting and reading today's letters? People in the world get their parents' books and sit and read them themselves; Vivian is like my parents, and I sit and watch the imperial edict. Even according to etiquette, there is no fault. "
Song Yun can't come to make the king yield. Later, the king sent Song Yun to a temple with almost no supplies. At that time, the postscript sent two little lions to King Gandhara, and Song Yun and others saw it. Later, when I saw the heroic spirit of the little lion, I felt that the lion in Chinese painting did not quite match its appearance.
So, I walked west for another five days and arrived at the place where the Tathagata gave his head to others. There is a pagoda temple with more than twenty monks in it.
I walked west for three days and arrived at Xintou River. On the west bank of the river, there is a place where the Tathagata, as a big fish, jumped out of the river in twelve years and helped people with meat. Towers have been built here, and there are notes. There are scales on the stone.
I walked west for three days and arrived in Fosaffo. Pingchuan Yuan Ye is fertile soil; The battlements are straight; There are many wealthy families among the people; There are lush trees and flowing springs here; This place is rich in treasures; Folk customs are simple and kind. Inside and outside the city, there are many ancient temples, many famous monks, great virtue and strange ways. A mile north of the city, there is a white elephant palace. There are stone carvings of Buddha statues everywhere in the temple, which are extremely solemn and beautiful. There are many Buddha statues, all wrapped in gold foil and shining. There is a white elephant tree in front of the temple, and the construction of this temple actually started from this. Leaves and leaves of trees are like dates, and the fruit will not mature until winter. According to the legend of the local elders, when this tree dies, Buddhism dies. On the inner wall of the temple, there is a picture of the prince and his wife begging Brahman with their children. When the local people see it, no one can stop crying.
I walked west for another day and went to the place where the Tathagata was picky. There is also a pagoda temple, in which there is a stone with traces of Kaya Buddha.
Five birds leave the stupa, and there are many miracles.
I walked west for another day and crossed a deep water by boat, which was more than 300 steps wide. Go west for 60 miles and you will arrive at Gandhara City. Seven miles southeast of the city, a bird left the stupa. Legend has it that the origin of the stupa is that when Tathagata was alive, he swam here with his disciples and pointed to the east of the city and said, "Two hundred years after I entered nirvana, there was a king named Carnice Jia who wanted to build a stupa here."
Two hundred years after the Buddha entered nirvana, there really was a king named Ganeshaga. Once he traveled to the east of the city, he found that four boys were tired of cow dung as towers, three feet high, and soon disappeared. The king thought the boys were strange and immediately built a tower cage to cover the place, but the dung tower gradually rose high and stood outside the tower, stopping when it was 400 feet from the ground. The king expanded the tower foundation by more than 300 steps, and since then, a wooden building has been built, which is as high as the dung tower. There are iron pillars on the floor, 300 feet high, and 13 gold plates, 700 feet off the ground. The tower has been built, and the dung tower is the same as the original one, with 300 steps in Tarnum. At that time, a Brahmin didn't believe it was a dung tower, so he touched it with his hand and found a hole. Although it is very old, the dung tower is still not rotted, and the pit is filled with fragrant mud, which has never been filled. Now there is a heavenly palace hanging over it.
This bird tower has been destroyed by skyfire three times since it was established. After burning, the king repaired it and restored it to its original appearance. The local elders said: this stupa has been burned by the sky fire for seven times, and the Buddhism should be destroyed. According to the legend of Tao Rong, the king told the stupa that the wooden building project had been completed, but there were still iron pillars, which could not be built in life. The king built a tall building at the four corners of the tower and placed a lot of gold and silver treasures. The king, his wife and the princes all burned incense and scattered flowers upstairs, prayed wholeheartedly for God's help, and then built the tree with a lasso. So the conference semifinals said that the four heavenly kings helped. Without God's help, people can't do it alone. )
Buddhism in the tower is made of precious jade, and its forms are ever-changing, which is hard to understand. When the sun rises in the morning, the golden plate is dazzling; When the breeze blows, the treasures jingle, and the floating maps of the western countries are the most important here. When the tower was first built, pearls were used to make a net and cover it. Later, after several years, the king considered that the pearl net was worth ten thousand gold, and he was afraid that someone would seize and plunder it in the next hundred years. Considering that the tower was damaged and no one could repair it, I took off the pearl net and put it in a copper wok. A big pit was dug a hundred paces northwest of the tower, and these pearls were buried. A tree named Bodhi Tree was planted on the ground surface. The branches of this tree spread in all directions, and the thick leaves covered the sky. There are statues in all directions under the tree, each of which is 10 feet high. There are often four dragons in charge of these pearls. If someone deliberately digs these pearls, then disaster will happen immediately.
