Scientists develop antibiotic stick designed to 'fix' on inflamed gum tissue

Come, come, TA is here again! The deep space editor who reports the latest news every day is here again! The weather is nice today, perfect for relaxing by reading the latest news. Without further ado, let’s find out together.

Gum disease is a very common condition that is usually caused by bacteria. Although oral antibiotics are often used to treat critically ill patients, new treatments may be more effective - and have fewer side effects. The problem with taking antibiotic medications for gum disease is that the medication is delivered throughout the body instead of being concentrated at the site of infection. This means that relatively larger doses are needed, potentially causing side effects to be more severe.

With this problem in mind, scientists at Germany's Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg have developed bendable polymer rods that are inserted into patients' periodontal pockets - which are when the gums The space that forms between teeth when tissue becomes inflamed.

The biodegradable stick contains an antibiotic called minocycline, which is contained in a carrier material called magnesium stearate. Once inserted, the drug is gradually released directly into the affected area as the polymer rod is harmlessly broken down by the body. In in vitro tests conducted so far, the treatment has been reported to be significantly more effective than traditional methods.

Since both antibiotics and polymers are approved and available for medical use, large-scale production should soon be possible. The technology is being developed by Fraunhofer spin-out PerioTrap Pharmaceuticals and could be on the market within a few years.

The research is described in a paper recently published in the International Journal of Pharmaceutics.
