Club History

1878-1902: The predecessor of Manchester United

Manchester United Football Club was founded in 1878, and the name at that time was Newton Heath LYR (LYR stands for everyone) The familiar English abbreviation of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company).

Newton Heath is the name of a common railway site in England. Workers on the construction site release their passion for football by playing against teams from other departments or other railway companies. They never thought that their team would occupy a place in English football and even international football competitions and become one of the world's top clubs. , but from the day this team was founded, it was destined that Manchester United's playing style is to emphasize teamwork and passionate offensive football.

Initially, it was hoped to change the name to Manchester Central, but the Manchester city government refused to approve it for a simple reason: the Manchester United Stadium is located in the suburbs of Manchester. Then, Newton Schiff proposed changing the name to Manchester Celtic (Mancheseter Celtic), but this time the Scottish Celtic club refused.

The Celtics are a true church team, headed by Brother Walfrid. Wolfred served as a priest in the Congregation of Mary in his early years. Marist Brothers. With such a religious background, how could Scotland's Celtic Football Club be an easy target to mess with? On August 8, 1898, Wolfred went directly to the court in London to file a lawsuit: Newton Heath, ignorant of the Catholic background, was falsely called "Celtic"! The Newton Schiff Club apologized in person and apologized 8 times in one go, basically losing face. On April 26, 1902, Newton Schiff's vigorous "naming campaign" that lasted for five years finally came to an end. They eventually named themselves "Manchester United". In the 2006-07 season, Manchester United met Celtic in the Champions League. Celtic fans made the number eight gesture to mock everything that happened after August 8, 1898.

When the Football Association was founded in 1888, those who founded Newton Heath felt that they were not worthy of competing with Blackburn Rovers and Preston North End. ) together to form the Football Federation. Newton Heath did not join the Football Association until 1892. Although there were twists and turns in changing the name, this did not affect the future success of the club.

1902-1909: The official birth and early glory of Manchester United

The financial situation of Newton Heath was relatively bad. By the beginning of the 20th century, the team was in unsustainable difficulties. At this time, a local winery owner named John Henry Davies invested money to save the team.

Davis decided to inject capital into the club, which allowed him to obtain certain benefits from the team's management. Since then, the team has changed its name several times, including Manchester Central Team, Manchester Celtic Team and so on. Manchester United, a name that would later become famous in world football, was officially born in April/May 1902.

The Rise of the Red Devils

The important figure who joined Manchester United after Davis was Ernest Mangnall. Mangnall became club secretary in 1903, and to this day, he is recognized as the club's first manager. His team includes recently signed goalkeeper Harry Moger and forward Charlie Sagar. The team won third place in the Second Division in two consecutive seasons, 1903-1904 and 1904-1905. The following 1905-1906 season was one of Manchester United's most glorious early seasons. The team's forward Dick Dack Dick Duckworth, Alex Bell and captain Charlie Roberts helped the team reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. And more importantly, the team was able to emerge from the Second Division and finally enter the First Division after twelve years in the Football League.

To celebrate the victory, Mangnall lured Billy Meredith from rivals Manchester City. Meredith, nicknamed the Welsh Wizard, can be said to be the first star of Manchester United, but at that time he was involved in a bribery case with Manchester City. Because of this, it seems that God is destined that many superstars of Manchester United will be enveloped in the shadow of other football superstars in the future. No unique personality. The addition of this outstanding winger boosted the morale of Manchester United. In the 1907-1908 season, Meredith assisted Sandy Turnbull to score consecutive goals, which ultimately enabled the team to win the first league championship title in history. . Manchester United participated in the 1908 Charity Shield for the first time as the league champion. In the game, Jimmy Turnbull, who has the same surname as Sandy Turnbull, scored a hat-trick to help Manchester United beat the FA Cup winner Queen's Park 4-0. Queens Park Rangers won the Charity Shield.

In 1907, Manchester United's upward momentum continued unabated and it took steps to become an important force in English football. It is worth mentioning that Manchester United's rise is closely related to the turmoil of its rival Manchester City. This is also the beginning of the feud between the two teams. In that year, the Football Association found out that Manchester City violated the regulations in paying player wages. At that time, the salary of first-division team players was stipulated at 4 pounds per week. However, in order to win over outstanding players, Manchester City had been secretly paying 6 to 7 pounds. As a result, the FA severely punished Manchester City, five officials were dismissed, and 17 players were banned from playing on behalf of Manchester City forever.

This chaos gave Manchester United a chance. Head coach Magnol responded immediately. He poached five outstanding players from Manchester City, including Billy Meredith. The team's strength improved rapidly. That season, Manchester United won a historic eighth place. name.

One year later, in 1908, Manchester United realized their long-cherished wish and won the first top league championship in history. The Red Devils were unstoppable this year, defeating Newcastle with 6 goals, Blackburn with 5 goals, Everton, Arsenal and Birmingham with 4 goals. This season, Manchester United scored a then-record 82 goals.

In 1909, Manchester United achieved another breakthrough in the history of play. They defeated Newcastle and Bristol and other teams and won the first FA Cup trophy in the club's history. Interestingly, in the final, Manchester United wore a white jersey with a red "V" on the chest. This jersey has become one of the Red Devils' classics. After the last round of the league that year, the chairman of Manchester United filled champagne with the FA Cup trophy, took it to the locker room of his opponent Arsenal, treated the Gunners players to a drink, and congratulated Manchester United on their achievements.

Four months later, Manchester United further enhanced its influence. At that time, the Players Union and the Football Association were in conflict. The Football Association asked all players to withdraw from the union. Other clubs complied, but Manchester United did not. Their players firmly supported the interests of the union. For this reason, the Football Association even decided to ban the entire Manchester United team. With the persistence and promotion of Manchester United, many clubs such as Middlesbrough, Newcastle, and Sunderland finally changed their minds and rejoined the union. The Football Association had to compromise and reached an agreement with the union. Manchester United also because of this Determination and perseverance in crisis are very popular.

The ups and downs of Old Trafford

Before 1909, Manchester United had been playing at Creighton Stadium. This was a stadium in poor condition and difficult to suit Manchester United's development needs. . In 1909, the new stadium was completed at Trafford Park. The originally planned capacity was 100,000, but it was reduced to 60,000 due to budget overruns. On February 19, 1910, Manchester United officially opened the new stadium and named it "Old Trafford". Liverpool became the first visiting team to play at this venue. From this year on, a new era began. .

In the 1911-12 season, Manchester United once again won the league championship. This was the first trophy witnessed by Old Trafford. In that year, Manchester United led Aston Villa by 1 point to win the championship. The head coach Mangnall won his second league trophy during his spell in charge.

The showdown between giants 80 years ago

Mangnall is considered the first great coach in the history of Manchester United, and his departure is surprising. In 1911, Magnol suddenly switched to his local rivals Manchester City, which was surprising because in the same week, he had just rejected Manchester City's request to buy Manchester United captain Charlie Roberts. Eight months later, Mangnall led Manchester City to win the league championship. After Manchester United lost their leader, they only ranked 12th.

Manganol's departure was a huge blow to Manchester United, and they began a journey of ups and downs.

Busby’s children

On February 19, 1945, the "Manchester Evening News" published the following news: "Matt Busby signed today Agreement and became the head coach of Manchester United..." At the time, Busby was only 34 years old. His arrival ushered in a new era for Manchester United. In 1946, after World War II ended and the Football League reopened, Manchester United also began to rebuild under the leadership of Busby. In 1949, the Old Trafford stadium, which was damaged by German bombing, was repaired and put into use. Busby began a great legend here.

Busby’s reconstruction began with the reuse of young people. In 1951, two players, Jackie Blanchflower and Roger Byrne, were less than 20 years old. A 20-year-old player has entered the Manchester United first team, which marks the beginning of the team's rejuvenation. Tom Jackson of the Manchester Evening News wrote: "Manchester United's 'children' are calm and confident..." This is the first time that Busby's young people are called "Babes". In 1952, the Manchester United team, a combination of old and new, won the First Division championship, and the Red Devils were back.

Sir Busby

In the early to mid-1950s, Manchester United's youth team won the FA Youth Cup five times in a row. They provided the first team with a steady stream of outstanding talents. With Busby's strong support, a group of young people such as Duncan Edwards entered the first team and experienced the taste of the league. At that time, Manchester United captain Baierny was only 25 years old and spent a lot of money to sign Tommy Taylor is also very young.

From 1956, "The Busby's Babes" began to take over the hegemony of English football. In the 1955-56 season, Manchester United led Blackpool by 11 points and won the league championship. The young champions Conquering England, surprisingly, the average age of this Manchester United team is only 22 years old. Busby's group of young people are famous all over the world.

[Sir Busby]

Sir Busby

Starting from the 1956-57 season, Busby led Manchester United to participate in European competitions despite the opposition of the Football Association. In the Club Cup (the predecessor of the Champions League), "Busby's boys" swept through Anderlecht, Dortmund, Bilbao and other teams, only to lose in the semi-finals to Stefano, Kopa, Puskas, Gento's Real Madrid (1-3 away, 2-2 at home). In that year, another young man who later became famous all over the world began to emerge at Manchester United. He was Bobby Charlton.

In 1957, Manchester United won the First Division championship again, and Busby's team swept the entire England. In fact, the construction of this team began in 1952. The Manchester United youth team won consecutive FA Youth Cup championships from 1952 to 1957, providing fresh blood to the first team. The "Busby Boys" served as A legend that will remain in the history of Manchester United forever.

Ferguson started an era

Ferguson once said that the greatest achievement in my life was that his Manchester United knocked Liverpool off the championship seat. As he said, the 1980s belonged to Liverpool, and in the 1990s Manchester United took over.

After the start of the 1986-87 season, the Manchester United team coached by Atkinson had a poor record, hovering at the bottom of the standings, exiting the League Cup early, and being eliminated from the FA Cup. Manchester United made the decision in November to appoint Alex Ferguson as their new manager. Prior to this, Ferguson's coaching performance in Scotland was very convincing. He led the Aberdeen team to break the situation where Celtic and Glasgow Rangers took turns taking the throne. During his eight years coaching Aberdeen, Ferguson led the team to win three Scottish League Championships (1980, 1984, and 1985), four Scottish Cups (1982 to 1984, 1986), and one Scottish League Cup (1983). He also won the European Cup Winners' Cup (1983) (defeated Real Madrid in the final).

The Fantastic Seven Warriors

Ferguson coached Manchester United for 20 years, met countless people, and had a mentor-disciple relationship with many famous football players, but let him name a few world-class players, his The selection took the media by surprise. In an exclusive interview conducted to promote the "Manchester United Ceremony", Ferguson named five world-class stars in his mind: Giggs, Schmeichel, Cantona, Keane and Scholes. Still not satisfied, two more were added: Rooney and Ronaldo to form the "Fantastic Seven Warriors".

Beckham, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Stam, who have made great contributions to Manchester United, are not included in this list. Even Bryan Robson, Hughes and other famous players who have made great achievements for him have also failed to be selected. Ferguson said: "I have commanded many world-class players in the years I have been here, and Schmeichel is definitely one of them. Giggs is indispensable, and Cantona could have been better, but there are some problems with him that you have to deal with from time to time. Be careful, plus Rooney, there are 4. And Ronaldo, 5. "Ferguson loves Ronaldo and praised the Portuguese youngster before he counted Keane and Scholes: "His position is the most difficult. He doesn't refuse to take the ball past others. He is good with both feet and is very brave. Once his decision-making ability improves, he will be a world-class player. And Keane, there are only 6. Scholes may be a bit controversial. But he is the smartest midfielder in our history."

In the 1987-88 season, Ferguson began to transform the team. He completed three important signings, Brian McClair ( Brian McClair from Celtic, Viv Anderson from Arsenal and Steve Bruce from Norwich. In this season, McClair scored 31 league and cup goals, becoming the second Manchester United player to score more than 20 league goals after George Best. By 1996, McClair had played 447 times for Manchester United and scored 126 goals. Bruce later became one of Ferguson's best central defenders and was an important contributor to the start of Manchester United's dynasty in the 1990s.

After winning the league runner-up in the 1987-88 season, Manchester United entered a period of downturn, and Ferguson almost lost his coaching position. In the 1988-89 season, Manchester United only ranked 11th and did not perform in the League Cup and FA Cup. Meanwhile, Ferguson was still buying the players he wanted, with Webber joining from Nottingham Forest, Gary Pallister from Middlesbrough and Paul Ince from West Ham.

The 1989-90 season was a critical year for Ferguson. The poor results last season caused his reputation to drop. The continued downturn in the league this season made Manchester United consider firing Ferguson.

At the beginning of 1990, Ferguson arrived at Manchester United's most difficult moment, but the victory in the FA Cup saved him. The quarter-finals were the turning point of everything. Manchester United defeated Nottingham Forest 1-0 in an away game. Mark Robins' goal allowed Ferguson came back from the dead, and an insider later revealed that Manchester United would fire Ferguson if they lost the game. Later, in the FA Cup final, Manchester United drew 3-3 with Crystal Palace and won 1-0 in the extra round. This championship retained Ferguson's position as coach, although Manchester United only finished 13th in the league.

In the 1990-91 season, Manchester United continued to win in the cup competition. They defeated Barcelona 2-1 in the final and won the European Cup Winners' Cup. This was Manchester United's first European Cup since 1968. Battle trophy. In the league, Manchester United improved compared to last season and finally finished sixth. During this period, one point was deducted for a fight with Arsenal on the field. Of course, Ferguson's lineup construction is still proceeding in an orderly manner, with Peter Schmeichel joining from Brondby, Andrei Kanchelskis from Shakhtar Donetsk, and England right back Paul Parker. Parker joined from Royal Garden Rangers. At this time, no one realized that an unprecedentedly powerful new dynasty was brewing.

2009. Sir Alex Ferguson sold the player Ronaldo he cultivated to Real Madrid for a record price of 80 million pounds. Created an earth-shattering transaction in football history. This is enough to reflect Ferguson's unique vision.

Unforgettable moment

In the 1991-92 season, Manchester United finished second in the league, and Leeds United led by Eric Cantona won the trophy. However, the League Cup champion Gave comfort to the Red Devils. In December 1992, Manchester United completed the last signing of the dynasty. They poached Cantona from Leeds. It is also worth noting that a group of young people trained by Manchester United’s youth training system won the FA Youth Cup. Among this youth team, there are some famous names in the future: "Lee Sharp, Beckham, Giggs, the Neville brothers, Scholes, Bart..."

The Red Devils Era

In the 1992-93 season, Manchester United ended its 26-year wait. In April 1993 On the 10th, Manchester United defeated Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 at home. They were once behind in the game, but two goals from central defender Bruce overtook the score and brought the Red Devils the crown they had dreamed of for many years. Ferguson won the title since coaching Manchester United. First league championship. In this year, Manchester United continued to build its lineup. Ferguson spent a then British record of 3.75 million pounds to recruit Roy Keane from Nottingham Forest. In the next ten years, this Irish tough guy supported the Red Devils. .

In the 1993-94 season, Manchester United won the league championship again, but the death of Sir Matt Busby during the season made the Red Devils extremely sad. Busby passed away on January 20, 1994. He created the first generation of Manchester United's glory in the 1950s and 1960s, and the "Busby children" will remain in history forever. At the end of the season, Manchester United won the double crown. In addition to being 8 points ahead of runner-up Blackburn Rovers in the league, they swept Chelsea 4-0 in the FA Cup final to win the cup. The only regret was that Manchester United lost 1-3 in the League Cup final. Lost to Villa, only one step away from the treble. After this season, Brian Robson left Manchester United after 13 years and became the player-coach of Middlesbrough, but the joining of Keane the previous year had prepared Manchester United.

The 1994-95 season was full of twists and turns. Cantona kicked a Crystal Palace fan in January and was banned by the FA for nine months. In the league, Manchester United and Blackburn were very close. Blackburn lost at Liverpool in the last round, which gave Manchester United a chance to overtake. However, the Red Devils could only get a draw against West Ham in the away game and ended up with 1 Sadly missing out on the league title, Dalglish and Shearer won the championship trophy for Blackburn. During this season, Manchester United made major changes in personnel. In January, they signed Andy Cole from Newcastle for a record-breaking price of 7 million pounds. At the end of the season, Ince unexpectedly went to Inter Milan. , Mark Hughes moved to Chelsea, and Kanchelski joined Everton.

Back then, they

In the 1995-96 season, Manchester United achieved a great reversal that is still talked about today. Keegan's Newcastle were 12 points ahead at Christmas, but United made an incredible leap forward in the second half of the season and overtook their opponents in April. In this season, Manchester United also won the FA Cup and became the first English team to win the Double Championship twice. Cantona defeated Liverpool with a volley goal 4 minutes before the end of the FA Cup final.

This year is also a year of renewal for Manchester United. At the beginning of the season, young people such as Butt, Gary Neville, Beckham, and Scholes became the main force of the first team. The season has become a time for young people to adapt to the Premier League, but under the leadership of Cantona, the newcomers burst out with amazing energy in the second half of the year, which strengthened Ferguson's determination to change players. After the season, Sharp went to Leeds, Parker was terminated, and Bruce joined Birmingham. Young people began to take over in an all-round way. At the same time, Solskjaer, Boboski and other new players joined.

With the full succession of the FA Youth Cup generation, the Manchester United dynasty gradually reached its peak. In 1997, the Red Devils defended the league championship. From 1999 to 2001, they achieved a domineering three consecutive championships in the league. . The 1998-99 season was the pride of all Manchester United people. In this year, they achieved the incredible feat of winning the Triple Crown. In the league, Manchester United took the lead in locking in the championship, and their victory over Tottenham allowed them to reach the top; in the FA Cup, the semi-final match against Arsenal was thrilling, and the score was still 1-1 just before the end of the 90 minutes. Arsenal won a penalty kick at this time, and Schmeichel miraculously saved Bergkamp's shot. In overtime, Giggs performed a classic victory while riding thousands of miles alone, and Manchester United advanced to the final. Won the second championship of the season.

Top of Europe

On May 26, 1999, at the Camp Nou Stadium in Barcelona, ??Manchester United faced Bayern Munich. This was one of the most classic Champions League finals in history. The suspensions of Keane and Scholes damaged Manchester United's strength. They fell behind 0-1 in 90 minutes, and their opponents still had several chances to seal the victory. The miracle came in the stoppage time of the second half. Beckham's two corner kicks allowed Sheringham and Solskjaer to score, and Manchester United created a miraculous reversal. Coincidentally, this day was Sir Busby's 90th birthday. Manchester United people looked up to God with tears in their eyes and thanked the eyes that had blessed them. In fact, this is not the first time that Manchester United has risen from adversity. In the semi-finals against Juventus, when they were 1-1 at home and 0-2 away from home, Keane took the lead and Cole and York achieved success. Go ahead.

Twenty-first Century

In the first decade of the new millennium, Manchester United once again took the lead in the world. They went to Brazil to participate in a brand new football event: International FIFA Club World Championship. For this reason, they gave up the chance to defend the FA Cup.

In the January expedition to South America, Manchester United failed to win the trophy as they wished. After all, it was too difficult to beat the Brazilian team on their doorstep in the sultry weather conditions. But Manchester United got an extremely valuable break under the South American sun. After returning to England, they entered the league with great energy and led their opponents all the way. They won the league trophy in advance in April. But the new problem facing Manchester United is that they have not been able to find a suitable candidate for the goalkeeper position since Schmeichel left.

In the 1999/2000 season, several goalkeepers, including Mark Bosnich, were unable to secure their positions at Manchester United. Therefore, it was not surprising that Fabien Barthez joined Manchester United in July 2000 after the French team won consecutive World Cup and European Championship titles.

Barthez, the main goalkeeper of the French team, has a perverse personality but extraordinary skills. Although Barthez made many mistakes in the Champions League, he still helped Manchester United win three consecutive league titles in the 2000/2001 season. Crown, only a few clubs in the history of England can win this honor. The most recent winner of three consecutive championships was the Liverpool team from 1982 to 1984, but Liverpool achieved three consecutive championships under the leadership of two coaches, namely Bob Paisley and Joe Biden. · Joe Fagan.

[Triple Crown]

Triple Crown

And behind Manchester United’s three consecutive championships, Ferguson played the most important role. He became the first player in the history of English football. A coach who completed a hat trick. After winning his third consecutive league trophy, Ferguson announced that he would resign as head coach at the end of the 2001/2002 season. At the same time, his assistant Steve McClaren also announced that he will go to Middlesbrough to replace Brian Robson as the team's head coach.

In order to fill the vacancy left by McLaren, Ferguson promoted Jim Ryan and Mike Phelan, who had played for Manchester United, to assistant head coach and head coach respectively. Manchester United first team coach. But while Sir Alex was filling in the gaps in the coaching staff, he was also making gaps in the team. He transferred defender Jaap Stam to Lazio. This decision surprised everyone, even Stam himself.

Barthez's teammate in the French team, Laurent Blanc, who participated in the 1998 World Cup, moved to Manchester United. He replaced Stam in the team and worked with him. Wes Brown, Gary Neville and Ronny Johnsen.

Many people believe that after Ferguson spent big money to buy Ruud van Nistelrooy and Veron, Blanco will be his new head coach. The last star. But in January 2002, Sir Alex Ferguson made another big move and signed Uruguayan forward Forlan, who was playing for Independiente.

But Forlan's position in the team is difficult to finalize, because Van Nistelrooy has set a record of scoring in 8 consecutive games in the league. In these eight games, Manchester United has won all of them.

After eight consecutive victories, Manchester United regained the confidence to defend the league championship. However, at the end of the 2001/02 season

the team failed to win the title. He was unable to recreate his past glory of leading the pack. He was eliminated by Mildersbrough in the FA Cup, the Champions League ended in the semi-finals, and he only finished third in the Premier League. For this reason, coach Ferguson announced He continues to stay on and is determined to lead Manchester United to greater glory in the 2002/03 season.

This was Manchester United’s ninth Premier League title in 15 years, and Giggs also became his own. The player who has won the most championships since the establishment of the Premier League, he won 9 Premier League championships in one go!

In the transfer market in the summer of 2007, Manchester United spent a lot of money to introduce Owen Hargreaves, Anderson Luisde Abreu Oliveira, Nani (Luís Carlos Almeidada Cunha) and Carlos Tevez (Carlos Tevez) are four stars. Among them, Hargreaves can solve the problem of strong waist that has plagued the Red Devils for a long time. The introduction of two talented young stars Anderson and Nani not only makes The Red Devils' midfield has been further rejuvenated and fresh blood has been injected, which has also given veterans Giggs and Scholes opportunities to rotate and rest.
