When do peonies bloom?

Normally, peonies bloom once a year. Usually it is from April 10th to April 20th, but now it is technically possible to advance it to April 5th and postpone it to May 5th.

Growth habits of peony

It likes a warm, cool, dry and sunny environment. It likes sunshine, but also tolerates semi-shade, cold tolerance, drought tolerance, weak alkali tolerance, avoids stagnant water, is afraid of heat, and is afraid of direct sunlight. It is suitable to grow in loose, deep, fertile, high, dry and well-drained neutral sandy loam soil. Does not grow well in acidic or heavy clay soils.

Sufficient sunshine is beneficial to its growth, but it cannot tolerate exposure to the hot sun in summer. If the temperature is above 25°C, the plant will become dormant. The optimum temperature for flowering is 17-20℃, but it must be treated at a low temperature of 1-10℃ for 2-3 months before flowering. It can withstand temperatures as low as -30°C, but in the cold northern regions, appropriate cold protection measures must be taken in winter to avoid freezing damage. The hot and humid weather in the south is extremely unfavorable to the growth of peonies. Therefore, peonies cultivated in the south need to be given specific environmental conditions in order to enjoy the beautiful peonies.
