Pingyuan County is located in the northwest of Shandong Province, bordering Linyi County and Yucheng City in the east and southeast, Wucheng and Xiajin in the west and southwest, Gaotang County in the south and Decheng District and Lingcheng District in the north. Pingyuan county is located in the primary and secondary tectonic units of the earth and belongs to a part of Liaoning-Hebei-Taiwan syncline in North China.

On the secondary structural unit, a line is roughly drawn from the vicinity of Liutun Village, Tangsan Township to Fangsi Village, Fangsi Town, Yucheng City. Its west side is Aoduan District of Linqing City, and its east side belongs to Jiyang District of Jinan City. The triangle extending from Liutun village to the northeast belongs to Chengning uplift area. There are faults between districts.

Some of these faults have been cut into the lower strata of Neogene, some have cut the boundary between Tertiary and Quaternary, and some have Cenozoic basalts along the faults. For example, Tertiary basalts exist in the northeast faults passing through Wang Miao Town, Qiancao Town and Wangfenglou Town, and in the south of Encheng Town and Wangdagua Town.
