Gu Jiguang's Academic Achievements

research method

When talking about Gu Jiguang's academic research, Mr. Luo Ergang summarized "four research methods": first, he paid attention to the dialectical relationship between generality and particularity; Second, pay attention to the difference between phenomenon and essence; Third, pay attention to the dialectical relationship between the whole and the part; Fourth, pay attention to the dialectical relationship between origin and cause and effect.

But before 1949, Gu Jiguang's research characteristics or methods were largely instinctive or subconscious. Although he is already a well-known expert in military history and economic history, Gu Jiguang still admits that his academic research has actually entered a dilemma. Although it involves a wide range of fields and has achieved fruitful results, once it develops in depth, it will be hindered by theory and methods. Gu Jiguang said to the research in his readme:

"I used to study history and always wanted to learn from it. As a result, I talked about the causal relationship of historical development and the vertical and horizontal relationship of historical facts. It is more objective to talk about various historical phenomena frequently. In this way, the historical facts of local fragments seem reasonable, but the whole is unreasonable; All kinds of phenomena seem reasonable, but they are unreasonable in essence. This is because my academic views at that time mainly belonged to the category of "economic history view". ..... After the founding of New China, Gu Jiguang had the opportunity to get in touch with Marxism, especially studying in the "August 1st" Revolutionary University and North China People's Revolutionary University for nearly two years. He not only carried out a thorough ideological transformation in politics, but also strengthened his socialist beliefs ... and in academic research, he re-examined his previous research work through the study of Marxism-Leninism, and took this as a guide to break through barriers and fetters step by step. Finally, my understanding of "communication" in historical research lies in clarifying the development law of social history through various phenomena of historical development under the guidance of Marxism, and making deliberate efforts towards this goal, so that my historical research seems to have entered a brand-new world. "

Research on government soldier system

Starting from 1934, write "Bu Shu Wei Bing System" and "Tang Zhe Chongfu Examination and School Supplement" to examine and revise the specific components of the government military system; By 1937, the officers and men of the Western Wei, Northern Zhou, Sui and Tang Dynasties were published in China Social and Economic History Series, followed by Re-discussion (Journal of Xiamen University, Episode 2, 1944) and Three Essays (Science and Teaching of Jiangxi Normal University, 1958). A summary study was made on the military, even the "Four Theories" (Journal of Jiangxi University, No.2, 198 1) and the "Five Theories" (Journal of Jiangxi Normal University, No.4, 1983), from which the initial resources and armament of government soldiers, the disappearance process of private soldiers and the government military system as a national army were discussed again. In the past 50 years, paying attention to the same problem shows Gu Jiguang's investment in this subject.

Marked by the textual research on the government's military system, the relevant papers written in the past, as Gu Jiguang himself said, mainly examined what was at that time and what role it played, although the examination was more rigorous. However, in the textual research of the military regime of the government, and in the related papers since then, we not only discuss what things are, but also consciously discuss why things are like this and not like that, discuss the relationship between things and other things at that time, and explore the position of things in the whole historical development process of China.

Gu Jiguang clearly expounded the relationship between the government military system and other military systems and arms, and also discussed the related achievements of Cen, Yang Zhijiu and Mr. Tang. Mr. Cen's estimate of the number of border soldiers and officers and men in the Tang Dynasty was used to prove his argument, and he put forward different views on Mr. Yang's statement that officers and men were inferior to men and that Mr. Tang confused the imperial army with officers and men. Whether it is approval or disapproval, it is based on a comprehensive investigation of the whole process from the origin to the disintegration of the military system of the Tang Dynasty and the imperial court.

Mr. He Ziquan expressed his appreciation for Gu Jiguang's research results, and expounded the origin of the system of officers and men, the system of military leaders since Wei and Jin Dynasties and the system of soldiers in Tuoba Department with rich materials, and linked the emergence of the system of officers and men with the emergence of the Han Dynasty, the Tuoba Department of Xianbei and the society at that time, "making the system of officers and men an interrelated part in historical development, not an isolated phenomenon." At the same time, it is pointed out that due to the lack of historical materials, many problems about the officer system have not been clarified, but many problems have been solved in the textual research of the officer system. 1935 "Supplementing the Book Series of Wei Dynasty" and "Collating by Tang Zhechong Bookstore" were included in the Supplement of Twenty-five History published by Shanghai Bookstore.

His main works are: Shanghai People's Publishing House, version 1962, reprint 1978, and Textual Research on the Official Army System copied and published by Hong Wen Pavilion in Taiwan Province Province; 1980 Essays on Ancient Economic History of China published by Jiangxi People's Publishing House; There are also four volumes of Manchu History and Ancient Historical Records. Editor-in-Chief of History of China's Military System.
