Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts is the only art college in southern China. The school was formerly known as Central South Academy of Fine Arts, and 1953 was established in Wuhan, Hubei Province with the approval of the Ministry of Education. At that time, it was formed by the merger of relevant departments of Central South College of Literature and Art, South China People's College of Literature and Art and Guangxi Art College. 1958 Central South Academy of Fine Arts moved from Wuhan to Guangzhou and was renamed Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. In 2004, the school built a new campus in Guangzhou University Town, forming a pattern of "one school and two districts". The school is now a provincial university in Guangdong Province.

Students from other places, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan began to register 1987.

"Painting", "Industrial Design" and "Sculpture" are the specialties with national characteristics determined by the Ministry of Education, and "Industrial Design" is the first batch of comprehensive reform pilots for undergraduate majors in local universities determined by the Ministry of Education. "Industrial Design Professional Collaborative Education Platform" was approved as the first batch of collaborative education platforms in Guangdong Province; Four majors, such as fine arts, are provincial majors, and eight majors, such as sculpture, visual communication design, environmental design, product design, art and technology, digital media art, animation and architecture, are listed as provincial comprehensive reform pilot construction projects. Five courses, such as watercolor painting, sculpture creation, creation (oil painting), design foundation-creative expression, and advertising creativity, were rated as "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" provincial-level quality courses, while two courses, such as "Social Responsibility of Advertising Creativity" and "Sketch Course of China Fine-brush Figure Painting", were approved as "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" provincial-level quality video open classes, and "Foundation of Spatial Design Form" and other courses were listed as/kloc-0. At present, there are 1 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 7 experimental teaching demonstration centers in Guangdong universities, 7 joint training demonstration bases for graduate students in Guangdong province, 29 in-school laboratories and 44 off-campus practice bases, which provide good conditions for practical teaching in our school.
