What does the dual-format recording pb slot mean?

The whole network can't find the correct answer. This senior Nikon user came to answer and explained in one sentence:

"Which card is set in the PB slot, the photo of which card will be played first when the photo is played back."

As shown in the figure, the photos in SD are played first.

The following is a conversation. Don't watch it if you don't like it.

For example, if Nikon camera Z6II inserts two cards XQD and SD, both cards are set to write shooting data at the same time, for example, the main card XQD writes RAW and the auxiliary card SD writes JPG. At this point, the PB slot is set to SD card, so when you press the playback photo button, JPG;; Play in SD; If the PB slot is set to the XQD card, when you press the play photo button, the RAW in the XQD card will be played.

Actual workflow: set XQD as the main card, SD card as the auxiliary card, and PB slot as SD. When playing back, you can confirm the JPG photos on SD in time, which is convenient for deleting waste films. After the shooting, if you need to copy JPG to your mobile phone or send it to customers on site, you can choose to copy all JPG directly.

Comparison of Advantages and Disadvantages between Backup Mode and Primary Original+Auxiliary JPG Mode

Backup mode

The advantage of backup mode, that is, XQD and SD write RAW+JPG at the same time, is a double backup. When copying data, you only need to take out the SD card, and direct copying is RAW+JPG. There is also an XQD card in the camera, which can keep the latest shooting data as an emergency backup. If the card is full, you can delete unnecessary photos according to the shooting date. Backup mode is very important for professional photographers, which not only ensures that the data is infallible, but also prevents photographers from forgetting to bring their SD cards and ensures that at least one XQD card is inserted into the camera for a long time. (This is my own shooting habit in recent 10 years. )

Disadvantages of backup mode: In the case of delivering negatives by mobile phone on site, if there are both RAW and jpg on a page, there will be many processes to select more JPG. For example, Apple phones and Huawei phones need to be reordered by type in the file manager, and then slide multiple JPGs. If there are more than 200 photos, sliding multiple JPGs will get stuck, which is easy to be mishandled; Some Android models, such as Xiaomi's file manager, don't support sliding multi-selection. When there are many photos, one place at a time is particularly troublesome.

Primary original auxiliary JPG mode

The only advantage of using the main RAW JPG and the auxiliary JPG is that it is convenient to use the card reader to copy the "one-click selection" JPG to the mobile phone.

Two shortcomings of the main RAW JPG mode: two cards are copied at the same time when the computer is backed up, which increases the number of times that the XQD card is dialed out of the camera and loses the "insurance" of at least one card in the camera. If the RAW in XQD is deleted without checking when deleting the waste, then the RAW and JPG do not correspond, and the space occupied by the waste RAW will be larger.
