What's the difference between a passport and a travel permit?

Passport and travel permit are both documents for traveling abroad, but they are quite different in nature. Their differences are as follows:

1. Passport and travel certificate are different in nature. Passport is a legal document issued by the entry-exit administration to prove the nationality and identity of citizens. A travel permit is an urgent application issued when it is inconvenient to use a passport under special circumstances.

Passport and travel permit are issued by different units. China passports are issued, renewed and reissued by the Exit-Entry Administration Department of the Public Security Bureau. The issuance, renewal, replacement and issuance of travel permits shall be handled by diplomatic representative offices, consular offices and other overseas institutions authorized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of People's Republic of China (PRC).

3. The classification of passport is different from that of travel permit. Passports of the People's Republic of China are divided into diplomatic passports, official passports, ordinary passports and SAR passports. Travel permits are not subdivided, but only used as proof of identity abroad.

4. Passports are used in different ways from travel permits. The travel permit is urgently reissued after the passport is lost and needs to be used together with the lost passport certificate issued by the local police station; Passports can be used directly as long as they are within the validity period of visas.
