Mayu Island Scenic Area
Dingyan recommended star rating ★★☆☆☆
Mayu Island is located outside Shantou City Haikou. It takes about half an hour to get there by boat from Shantou City Square and sail southeast.
After the Shantou Bay Bridge, my country's first long-span suspension bridge, was completed in December 1995, Mayu Island became a pier of the bridge and was integrated with the Bay Bridge to form a new landscape. . The Bay Bridge has an approach bridge to Mayu Island. Now it is much more convenient to travel to and from Mayu Island.
Mayu Island is 0.65 kilometers long, 0.64 kilometers wide, covers an area of ??0.206 square kilometers, has an altitude of 39 meters, and a coastline of 2.3 kilometers. Due to its strategic location at the outlet of Shantou's inner sea to the outer sea, it has been used as a coastal defense outpost since liberation and was listed as a military restricted area. It was only opened to the outside world in 1979 and became a tourist attraction.
When we arrived at the pier, there was a dark brown stone on the sea. It was unattractive in appearance. The locals called it the Ma Seal Stone. According to legend, it was the relic of Mazu when she transformed into a god and entered the sea. Strange to say, this Ma's Seal Stone always floats to the surface of the sea regardless of the ebb and flow of the tide, and is not submerged by the sea water.
The most surprising thing about the island is that there are two Mazu temples on one island. It is common for fishermen along the coast to believe in Mazu, but two temples on one island, standing next to each other, with incense and incense, are unique to this island.
The ancient temple located at the northern foothills of Mayu Island was built by fishermen in the Yuan Dynasty who brought incense from the Meizhou Ancestral Temple. It was later destroyed and rebuilt in 1861 (the eleventh year of Xianfeng in the Qing Dynasty). It was rebuilt in 1928. It is one of the earliest mother palaces on the coast of eastern Guangdong. The ancient temple has a main hall with three bays. The two shuttle-shaped stone pillars from the original construction are preserved in the temple. For many years, before going to sea, people have gone to the island to worship and bring live chickens to release. As a result, the island is full of chickens, so Mayu Island is also called Chicken Free Mountain. There is a colorful rooster sculpture in front of the temple, which is a reflection of this period of history.
Legend has it that the incense burner in the old temple rolled down the hillside three times for unknown reasons, causing people to speculate that Mazu had lived there for a long time and wanted to move to a new home. So, a new temple was built where the incense burner landed. There are two "Tin Hau Temples", the old and new, on the island. The new temple was built in the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty. It is divided into gate pavilion, lower hall, dragon and tiger patio, worship hall and main hall. It is large in scale. The latter two temples fell into disrepair and collapsed, and were rebuilt in 1981.
After reconstruction, the new temple embodies the three major architectural art characteristics of Chaoshan wood carvings, stone carvings and inlaid porcelain. In particular, the six groups of inlaid porcelain statues on the roof, including Xue Rengui's March to the East and Luo Tong's Sweeping to the North, have withstood the sea wind and sun for a long time. It does not fade, and the characters are lifelike and amazing. In front of the statue of the Queen of Heaven in the temple, there is a couplet: "Rivers and lakes have clear waves, allowing you to travel far and near." The seven characters in the first couplet are all radicalized by three points of water, and the radicals of the second couplet are all "by boat", which is quite distinctive.
There is a "Guanhai Pavilion" in Luan Mountain. It was also called "Tao Zhu Pavilion" because Comrade Tao Zhu landed on the island in 1962 and initiated its construction. In February 1983, at the age of 87, the famous calligrapher and painter Liu Haisu left the inscription "The blue sea of ??Mayu is flying with white waves, the wind and waves of the sky are coming to an end", which is now engraved on the sculpture in front of Zuichao Building.
There is a giant stone statue of Guanyin Bodhisattva at the highest point on the island. It is 12 meters high and made of 105 large and small stone sculptures. It can be seen when passing by the Bay Bridge.
