How harmful is the El Ni?o phenomenon to Jiangsu Province?

What impact will it have on Jiangsu?

1 The Meiyu period in Nanjing may be delayed this year

According to the monitoring of the National Climate Center, the rainy season in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River will be delayed this summer, and the date of entering the Meiyu period may be later.

According to historical statistics, in most El Ni?o years in the past 50 years, China's main summer rain belts have appeared south of the Huaihe River. For example, in 1969, the plum rains in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River lasted for a long time. From late June to mid-July, heavy or torrential rains occurred many times and serious floods occurred. In 1997, the main rainy belt in summer occurred in the area south of the Yangtze River, while the north experienced persistent high temperatures and little rain, making it one of the driest years in the past 50 years. In 1998, due to the lagging influence of El Ni?o and the combined effects of other factors, the Yangtze River Basin experienced the largest flood since 20th century, second only to 1954.

The average plum season in Nanjing all year round is June 18, but due to the influence of El Ni?o last year, the plum season was late, and it was not until June 25.

2 The temperature in the province this summer is expected to be slightly higher than normal

Some media reported that the heat in 2015 may once again set a new record, which is expected to be the hottest year in climate records. Wang Zhaomin, a professor at the School of Marine Science at Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, believes that the "warmest" here refers to the average temperature, not the temperature on a certain day. However, Wang Qiyi, a senior engineer at the National Climate Center of the China Meteorological Administration, previously analyzed in an interview with the media that North China is likely to experience high temperatures and scorching heat this year, and a summer heat wave will hit people. In the Northeast, cold air activities are frequent, and the temperature in summer is abnormally low, resulting in a "cold summer". Continuous precipitation in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River will bring down the temperature and make the weather cool, and some areas may experience a "cool summer" again.
