How to make the designed picture feel more impactful?

This paper introduces how to apply pictures in the identification design of office supplies, how to design an impact cover, how to analyze the composition of NIKE web pages and how to make attractive vertical calendars, and introduces the extension skills of pictures to create an area where words are applied, hoping to inspire you and get more inspiration in actual design.

First, the design of office supplies

LOGO has a strong symbolic meaning, but sometimes it can't fully express the real thing. Sometimes, instead of designing a traditional LOGO, it is better to be like Dean &; Thomas Construction Company chose three pictures to design its office supplies. These vivid pictures look like a brochure in specific applications. The key is to keep the font, size, position, alignment and color consistency on stationery, envelopes and business cards.

1. stationery design

2. Envelope design

3. Business card design

The characteristics of the above three are as follows:

1 and three items, the size, shape and position of the picture are the same, and the top of the picture adopts the way of full bleeding position.

2. In stationery and envelopes, the margin on the right side of the picture is half the width of the picture, while in business cards, due to the narrow layout, the margin on the right side is one third of the picture.

The text, style and color at the bottom of the picture are the same. Moreover, the font uses a low-key color (gray as shown above), which can fully highlight the picture. All text is right-aligned.

4. When designing these three things, because the location of the business card is the smallest, it is difficult to design, so we should design the business card first, and then transfer the design style on the business card to other items.

Second, create focus in the layout.

Utah has an impressive national park, but its original guide cover design failed to convey the unique landscape of the national park. In this cover, the canyon, the sky and the background are all squeezed into a narrow layout, and the visual effect is blurred. What we want to design is not an all-encompassing panorama. Good design must have a focus, otherwise the design will lack strength. See how we changed it.

In the original design, the color and pattern of the canyon are similar to the charming sky, and a similar background picture is added behind the picture. The designer also added a yellow rectangular box to solve the problem of title placement. The problem is that this rectangular border looks dull and does not present the beautiful natural landscape of the national park.

Original cover design of Utah national park travel brochure

In the revised design, we created a visual focus. The unique rock landscape of Thor's Hammer in Bryce Canyon attracts readers' attention. Different from the yellow rectangular titles in the original design, in the revised design, these fonts we chose well reflect the landscape characteristics of the picture. In a long and narrow page, the picture is placed in the center, and the fonts are in close proportion to the focus of the page and pattern, so that these fonts look like those stones. This coordinated design allows us to look at them naturally from top to bottom without feeling embarrassed.

The picture on the cover comes from the picture on the right above. We removed the above background in the hope that readers can avoid unnecessary interference and focus on this unique rock more quickly.

Improved design

Third, another form of focus expression.

If you want to use three words to describe the famous cyclist Lance Armstrong, who once suffered from cancer, but still won the championship, then Nike's advertising slogan "Just do it" is perfect. Similarly, Nike's lance armstrong page is full of power. What makes this page feel powerful? Because those small elements work in a large area.

When you have an expressive photo of Zhang Fuyou, the designer's task is to help the picture convey information more effectively. The picture below consists of two parts (red line), just separated from the center line, with Armstrong on the right and the whole black area on the left. The font is small, but the color is yellow, which is in great contrast with black. These fonts are all within his sight (the dashed horizontal line in the above picture). All the elements are handled properly-no publicity, no design traces, but the whole effect left a deep impression on you.

The picture below shows the design of the web page. At first glance, you may not immediately notice (of course, this is intentional) the following low-key advertising information.

Small elements are placed alone in a large space, which is also an eye-catching design. Keeping a low profile in color is to avoid weakening the sense of power in the above picture.

Fourth, cool enough! Design a desktop vertical calendar the size of a CD box.

Here, we hope you can make your desktop have more things to review in the new year-designing this year's calendar. This shelf is as big as a CD box. You can put your own calendar on it. When turned over, it can be turned into a vertical display stand. Because it is transparent on both sides, you can also print some promotional materials on the back of the calendar. When designing a calendar, you can use single-sided printing or double-sided printing. The design of the calendar must be consistent, and if you want to print advertisements on the back, you should also have the same style.

5. Reuse part of the picture to form the background.

Do you want to use pictures in your design, but you can't find a very suitable place to put words on the pictures? Or do you think a picture is too dull because of its lack of layering? Still feel that the composition of the picture does not give people a good visual effect? Try the practical skills we introduce here-copy a part of the picture, then enlarge it, and then merge it with the original picture to create a natural area.

Change the page size (see the figure below). In Photoshop, copy and paste the upper part of the wing, move the copied part to the lower part and enlarge it. (1) Then carefully handle the joint between the edge and the background with a soft brush to make it naturally blend with the background. (2) Then take a color on the copied picture with the eyedropper tool, and then fill the blank below with soft strokes.

With this area, it will be different! It not only provides the position of our characters, but also makes the whole picture distinct and fuzzy, just like the effect of different focal lengths when a camera takes pictures, and everything looks natural.

Putting words on a picture, if it lacks a solid color area, it is difficult for these words to have a clear effect, but stiffly adding a square or round solid color area sometimes makes the whole composition appear uncoordinated.

We cut a small petal from the top and moved it to the lower corner to enlarge it. Because the background on the petals is relatively simple, this skillfully creates an area for the text. At the same time, the red petals match the green at the top of the edge very beautifully.
