Who named the typhoon?

Because a tropical cyclone usually lasts more than a week, several tropical cyclones may appear in the ocean at the same time. With a name, it is not easy to get confused. It is said that an Australian forecaster named typhoons for the first time in the early 20th century, and named tropical cyclones as politicians he didn't like, so that meteorologists could make fun of him publicly.

In the northwest Pacific, the formal naming of tropical cyclones began with 1945, and only women's names were used at first. Later, it was said that due to the opposition of feminists, men's names and women's names were used alternately from 1979.

1 997165438+1October 25th to1February/Sunday, the 30th session of the Typhoon Committee of the World Meteorological Organization decided that tropical cyclones in the northwest Pacific and the South China Sea should be named in Asian style. Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao respectively put forward the names of several tropical cyclones, and these names came into effect from 65438+ 1 in 2000.

They all adopt the Asian names provided by 14 countries and regions, members of the Typhoon Committee of the World Meteorological Organization. The new nomenclature has two characteristics, which are obviously different from those of tropical cyclones in other areas.

First, few people use names, most of them use the names of flowers, animals, birds, trees and even food, and some of them are descriptive adjectives.

Two, the naming table does not use the alphabetical order of the names, but according to the alphabetical order of the countries or regions that provide the names. Each country and region provides ten names, and there are 140 names in the name list.

In general, the pre-established naming list is reused year after year in sequence, but under special circumstances, some names may "retire" from the famous list. When a typhoon causes particularly serious disasters or casualties, it becomes a well-known typhoon. In order to prevent it from having the same name as other typhoons, this name has been deleted from the current naming list and will not be used in the future.
